A crash is where the software has died at this point it is unlikely that it will ask you you save, that said it would be nice if Storyline had file recovery like office.
There is no way to retrieve unsaved work, the best thing I find is to be obsessive about saving regularly (every 20 minutes in my case) that way you only ever lose 20 minutes work.
