Slide background fill bug?
May 05, 2018
When I use a shape filled with slide background (bitmap image) to block items on layers, it works fine for the first instance, but when I copy/paste that same shape onto other layers it doesn't.
Preview mode is fine, but after publishing it to Articulate Review, the pasted shapes show as black.
I found that I have to create the same shape over on each layer. Then displays as intended after publishing.
Is this a bug?

Hey Charles,
Thanks so much for bringing this up. I did some testing in a new Storyline 360 file, and I wasn't able to recreate the black images you are seeing in Articulate Review.
Would you mind sending me the Articulate Review "Share" link, as well as a sample slide that has this problem? I'd like to take a closer look at your set up. Thanks!
Hi Alyssa,

I made a rectangle and filled it with slide background on the first layer, then copied & pasted it on to the second layer.
It previews fine, but after publishing I see shape filled with black on the duplicate.
I've attached the story file as well.
Thanks, Charles. That was really helpful! While I'm not seeing a shape filled with black on the duplicate, I am seeing that the shape on layer 2 is transparent. Here's a Peek screen recording of my testing.
This certainly seems like a bug, so I'm going to share this with our Product team. If we are able to get a fix in place, I'll let you know!
Interesting. I totally see black.
In a new slide, the bkg fill boxes work fine when I first view the layer, but when I revisit the same layers the boxes are black!
In what web browser are you viewing the Articulate Review link? I was viewing in Chrome v.66.
Windows Edge - black shape
Chrome: transparent shape
Mac Safari: perfect
Mac Chrome: transparent shape
Mac Firefox: transparent shape
I just added a 3rd layer with the object remade, not cut and pasted. same results. The 3rd layer shows fine in all the browsers.

I just heard from client using Chrome 58.0.3029.110 (64-bit) on a PC and she's not having the black box or transparent box issue.
My Mac Chrome is like yours, version 66.0.3359.139 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Windows Chrome is the same 66.0.3359.139 (Official Build) (64-bit)
My Microsoft Edge is Microsoft Edge 41.16299.371.0 and Microsoft EdgeHTML 16.16299
My Mac Firefox is version 59.0.2 (64-bit)
Thanks for those extra details, Charles. That's really helpful. Interesting that the problem doesn't happen in Safari or in an older version of Chrome. I'll be sure to add that information to our bug report.
I'll let you know as soon as I get an update!
Hi Alyssa, has there been any progress on this bug? I can't rely on using the background boxes to cover up items if I cut and paste. It works fine in some browsers but not in others as noted above.
Hi Charles,
Thanks so much for checking in. We're still investigating this bug, and I'll be sure to update you once we know more.

Thanks Alyssa, I'm surprised this takes so long to fix.
Has there been any update on this bug?
Hello Jeff and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)
Thanks for reaching out.
If you're having difficulty with copying the shapes/objects, creating a new one is a workaround.
I wanted to share some information on how we define bugs and how we tackle them when they occur.
You are in the right place to be notified of any updates.
I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly. Unfortunately, creating a new shape didn't work for me. All my shapes look fine in preview mode, but when I publish, some of the shapes don't display the slide background image. I am unable to share my slides because the content is private, but I am experiencing the same issue as Mr. Radanovich.
It seems as though this workaround worked well for users for several years and recently became a problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be2T95BMVjc&feature=youtu.be
Is this likely caused by the browser?
Hi Jeff,
Were you viewing the Flash or HTML5 output? The new shapes should work for HTML5, as objects with Slide Background Fill do not work at all in Flash.
We've also seen this happen if a slide layer is duplicated in addition to copying an object.
If you're still running into a problem and it's a bit different than I've described, do you have a copy without private content you could share? Even one slide with some sample images would help us see what you've set up and offer alternative ideas.
Hi, everyone.
I just wanted to share that we no longer see the bug reported where Object with Slide Background Fill is invisible if that object was copied from another one using the latest build of Storyline (3.61.27106.0).
If you're using the latest version and you're still experiencing this issue, please reach out to our support team through a case.
