Storyline 2 won't open/load
Feb 05, 2016
I am running Storyline 2 on Windows 7. Since the latest Microsoft .NET Framework update (4.6.1 for Windows 7 for x64 KB3102433), I am unable to open Storyline 2 at all - from the .exe or by opening a .story file. There isn't even a flicker of a process beginning in Windows Task Manager.
IT is looking into rolling back to the last version of .NET, but has anyone else experienced this or do you have any suggestions for a fix?
ETA1: IT has performed all of the steps listed on the Unexpected/Erratic behavior list for Windows 7 as well.
ETA2: IT rolled back to the earlier version of the .NET Framework, and now Storyline 2 will open. They have also submitted a ticket to Articulate about the issue.

Hi, Jaemie -- So sorry to hear of your difficulties! Do you happen to have your ticket number so I can search for your case to get an idea of where our Engineers are in the troubleshooting process? I did a search under your name and do not have a ticket that corresponds with the issue you have posted here. Thanks!
Our IT staff filed the issue: #00734528. Thanks for looking into this!
Hi, Jaemie -- Thanks so much for the ticket, and here is what I can share on the progress being made so far. Our support engineer, Jonathan, offered...
"Thanks for contacting Articulate Support! Sorry to hear about the issue you are having. Can you please try to do a clean reinstall of Storyline by following all the steps from this article especially the one about using the clean up scripts?
After installing Storyline, restart your computer. Make sure also to do everything while in admin mode. Let me know if this helps."
to which it looks like your colleague replied...
"Jonathan,
I could not try a clean reinstall because the program would not uninstall. Nothing happened when I tried (the same thing that happened when I tried to open Storyline 2). The only thing I could do was uninstall .NET Framework 4.6.1 and reinstall Framework 4.5. As soon as I did that, Storyline 2 opened with no problems."
So, at this point, Jaemie, it looks to me like everything should be back in working order! Please be sure to reply within your case if you or your colleague should find that you need additional assistance. :)
Thanks! My colleague will keep our ID team posted.
Just wondering: Does Articulate know what the issue was between Storyline 2 and .NET Framework 4.6.1? And has it been addressed with SL update 8?
That would be good to know. Windows keep telling me the .NET Framework 4.6.1 is an "Important Update" that I should install, but I'm afraid to try it...
Our IT department rolled back .NET to the previous version. If an
Articulate staff member doesn't get back to you, I can let you know on
Monday if my .NET has updated yet or not (I can't control installations, IT
does, so I really don't know).
Hi Judy,
I don't know if we were able to identify that the .NET Framework 4.6.1 was the root cause of Jaemie's issue - although using the earlier version did solve it. I can reach out to some other members of our team and see if they've some additional insight.
Thank, Jaemie and Ashely. It would be nice to know what the real issue is.
