Storyline vs. Captivate for Mac Users
Nov 22, 2012
I have 29 days left of a 30 day Storyline trial. I'm thinking of converting to Storyline from Captivate, but . . . things haven't started off well. I can't preview my slides using Preview mode. When I publish, I can preview the slides, but the video doesn't play. I tried updating Flash, but I seem to be unable to do so in Parelells 8 using Windows 8 on my Mac. So, my question is probably this: is it possible to use a Mac for Storyline without jumping through a million hoops or cutting through a sea of workarounds?

I haven't tried Storyline on Windows 8. But I'm not running into any problems running Storyline on Windows XP within VMWare Fusion on a 4GB Macbook Air or in Windows 7 on VMWare Fusion on a MBP that's a couple of years old. The trouble could be Windows 8. You may want to submit a support ticket to see if someone can pinpoint some answers.
I agree with Steve - I'm running Storyline without any problems on Windows XP within Parallels.
It sounds like my problem could be Windows 8. But I suppose it could be Parallels 8. I'll try to figure out how to trial Parallels with an older version of Windows.
I had this problem with windows 8 and paralells, during the preview never managed to get it fixed. I use windows 7 and work perfectly
Thanks for your help. I was going to try opening and previewing my Storyline project in VM Fusion with Windows 8 to see if it might work. But, Storyline seems to be fused with Parallels. Is there any way to open it in Fusion?
I use SL in Parallels 7 and Windows 7 with no issue on an iMac. I also run Parallels 8 with Windows 7 on a Macbook Air. So no issues with Parallels 7 or 8 in my experience.
Windows 7 32- or 64-bit?
Hi Evan,
How is both for an answer. Windows on iMac is Windows 7 Ultimate with a 32-bit install on Parallels 7 (thought I needed 32-bit to run Articulate Studio). I have Home Premium 64-bit running on the MacBook Air with Parallels 8.
Beginning to think it is the Windows 8 is causing the problems. Is everything else running ok in Window? I remember Parallels sending out an email with critical warnings for Windows 8. I didn't pay much attention to it, but I believe it was an all or nothing proposition for getting an existing install of Parallels to work.
I wonder if Windows 8 users on a PC are experiencing any issues.

Again, I'm contemplating switching from Captivate to Storyline, primarily because Captivate can't seem to adapt to updates in OS software. Do you think that compatibility with Windows 8 on Parallels or Fusion is something Articulate will work out soon?
Hey Evan,
We're actively testing Storyline and Studio '13 compatibility with Windows 8 (running with and without a VM), and in fact, many of our users and staff have already switched over with few reported issues. Internet Explorer 10 seems to have some tracking issues in early testing, but we'll be sure to let everyone know once we have an official support policy in place.
Thanks for asking!
If I purchase SL and run it on a VM housed on a iMac would I experience any problems versus running it on a PC?

Hi Oscar,
I can only speak to Parallels (version 7 and 8) running Windows 7: I have encountered absolutely no issues that can be attributed to running in Parallels versus a PC. I had earlier versions of Parallels (4,5,6) that ran Articulate Studio on XP and Windows 7 with no issues either.
Sounds like Windows 8 is not a good idea yet (in general).

Am on Parallels with storyline, no problem, but then I have a SSD, and bags of RAM, might help there.
The other selling point is that Captivate does not work with SAP !
Hi Peter,
What was the outcome of this testing?
Thanks!
Hi Jessi! Are you having a particular issue that you need for us to look into. This thread is a bit dated and Peter works in another position here at Articulate.
Hi Leslie,
Thanks for the note. I am a long time ID but new to the e-learning world. I am starting a new position next week where I will be responsible for creating e-learning modules and have been doing my homework to decide whether I want to use Articulate or Captivate. I love that Articulate is so easy to learn and just signed up on E-learning Heroes. Mostly I just want to be use that I am not going to run into a lot of problems as a Mac user. From this forum, I've learned that many Mac users are successfully running Storyline. I found this post interesting and am curious to learn more about if there is any movement around Storyline for Mac or if using a virtual windows environment is the long term solution. Just new to the game and curious. Thanks!
Awesome, well good luck in your decision. I'm sure it goes without saying what my vote would be
We do have many Mac users and they are a very helpful bunch as well. I'm not sure about a native Mac version, but you are certainly welcome to add your voice here (I know many have been asking).
Oh, and of course I see that Ashley is helping you here and you already submitted a request as well (via this post).
You're getting around! Good luck
