Text Entry Search

I am building an Abbreviation Glossary, where you type in an Abbreviation in a text entry field and then click a Search button to locate the layer with the same title as the abbreviation typed in. However, I would like to streamline this and let them search by both abbreviation and the full term. But don't want to create duplicate layers. Does anyone know if there is there a way to create a text entry search that will search for information on the layer rather than just the layer title? If so can a wildcard search be used as well?
