I tried what you suggested to add a block of text in have it fade in but it still doesn't look like the text is being typed in. I recall a tutorial was done in presenter of how to do this. However, I haven't been able to find it to watch.
I have a faint recollection of that tutorial as well...but I think it may have used some animations that aren't present in Storyline. If you're feeling uber geeky, I suppose you could create your own effects with a 3rd party tool and then import, but that seems awfully wonky for this.
One suggestion: break the word up into individual letters and then have the letters appear individually one after another?
It doesn't work to break it up by individual letters. There has to be a way to do this. With development of simulations, at least 50% of the time instructional designers need to mock up data. In this case neither the video or view mode of screen recordings will work for me.

Jodi,
Could you add a block of text with the information and have it fade in?

Jodi,
One other thought...would it be possible to record and then mask after the fact? Here's a link to some info on that
technique...
