Issues With Variable References Since Update 12

Jan 24, 2018

I wanted to check whether anyone else has noticed any issues with the display of variable references since updating to the latest version of Storyline 360 - January 23, 2018 (Build 3.12.14533.0)?

I've found a couple of things that are creating issues in a few of my existing courses, listed below.

Issue 1: Font size of variable references shrinks instead of resizing the shape to fit the text, despite this option being selected.

SL360 Variable reference text shrinking

Issue 2: Long strings of text no longer wrap in the shape despite this option being checked.

SL360 Variable reference text over running

Both issues suggest that the text boxes may be ignoring the parameters set by the user.

I attach a sample file below.

Hi Paul,

When I view your link, I do see different font sizes:

Could you verify two things for me?

  1. Go to Help >> About Storyline, and let me know the exact update number of Storyline you're using. It should be in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Re-publish your file for Web, zip the output, and upload the zipped output to Tempshare. Then, please share the Tempshare URL with me.

I'll be standing by!

Hi Alyssa,

I have update 2.

I installed the latest update to see if it would fix this issue.

Also tried Storyline 360

When I click the Check for Updates button in Storyline 3, the response is “There are no updates available at this time”.

Tempshare url :

I will reinstall and try a new build.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Alyssa,

The issue looks to be that if a computer has a custom font size set for display (e.g. below Windows 10 recommends 125% for my laptop), Storyline seems to use this setting for any text that incorporates a variable reference, when publishing the file.

This probably accounts for why:

  • You cannot duplicate my result from the same file as your system’s font display is set to 100%.
  • You/I view my output and the font sizes are incorrect.
  • You/I view your output and the font sizes are correct.
  • Only my published files are affected.

I have re published the original file posted with the system font size set to 100% and all is fine:

Might be worth looking in to eliminating this in a future update.

Thanks for your prompt responses and help in solving this issue, very much appreciated!

Hi Paul,

I know you were using Storyline 3 earlier and had tested out the variable behavior with Storyline 360 too. I wanted to let you know that today, Storyline 360, build 3.21.17083.0 was released and included the following fix:

  • Text with variable references could have the wrong formatting, such as size, color, or line spacing. In some cases, a variable reference was missing from the published course.

That fix will also be included in the next update of Storyline 3, (The release of that is still TBD) but I'll keep you posted on it here!

Hi everyone! I'm excited to let you know that we released update 6 for Storyline 3! It includes enhanced features and fixes - Check them out here.

One fix addressed an issue where variable reference font size was displayed too large if Windows display is 125%.
