Video, players, and timelines

May 06, 2014

Hello, all you e-learning heroes!  We're having a strange issue.  I have an icon that I want to show up at a certain time in the timeline.  So, I've trimmed it to the time I want it to appear.  This slide has a few other shapes, text, and a video which is the main attraction.  The icon is supposed to show up over the video at the appointed time, but it does not (in preview mode and when published).  However, if I play the timeline it works.  I've tried moving the icon to where it's not on top of the video and even sending it to the front to be sure the video wasn't covering it.  Has anyone ever had this problem before?

Hi Jessica!

Just out of curiosity, what type of video are you using in this slide? If it's an embedded video, or a video from a website, the icon may not show up over the video.

If, however, you're inserting the video as a file or using a recording created in Storyline, it should work just fine.

Are you able to share your .STORY file here, so we can take a look?

Thanks!

Hi Jessica,

No problem! :)

If you'd like, you can submit a support case that contains the file. In your support case, insert ::christine:: in the case description. This should assign both the case and file to me, so I can take a look at what's happening. Please be sure to provide some details on the slide(s) where this is happening as well as a link to this thread, so I can keep you updated.

Thanks!

Hi Jessica,

The case (#00398810 for my reference) and file were successfully assigned to me. Thank you!

I took a look, and I apologize, but I'm a little confused. On the section for "Wipe" I see that you have a "Home" icon. I assume this is the one you're referring to, correct? When I preview in the slide, the video plays very well and the icon loads at the end of the timeline. When I preview the slide, I see the same thing.

On the other section, "Manage" I only see the "Home" icon on the last slide - I don't see it on any slides that contain a video. For example, slide 9.2 "Home" contains a video, but the icon is not present.

Could you let me know which object you're wanting to show over the video, please? I'm assuming it's the "Home" icon, but I want to be sure.

Also, I'll keep any links or files private, unless you express that you'd like to have them shared here.

Thanks very much!

Yes, so, 7.1 has the home icon.  9.1 used to have a next button, but I got frustrated and decided to just use the one on the player seeing as how there are slides that come after it.  I was trying to prevent people from skipping the video.  So, I just previewed 7.1 again, and at first the home icon did not show up.  But, I was gonna record the screen to show you, and when I paused it, the home icon showed up, but way before it's supposed to.  I tried it again without pausing and, of course, now it's working fine.  Do you think it's some weird rendering issue?  The other place I forgot to mention was 6.1 on layer four, but that one I can see why it's not working--it comes in way too late.

Hi Jessica,

Hmm - that is a little strange, isn't it?

Well, let's figure out what's causing this!

First, please make sure that you're working with a local project file when you modify or publish your project. If you're working on a network drive, or any other external storage, that might be causing the trouble.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

The name of the file you sent to me looks perfectly fine - but if the one you're working with differs from this, it may be a good idea to check the name and file path.

Please make sure you're running the most recent version of Storyline. Articulate Storyline Update 5 includes bug fixes, performance improvements, and HTML5 output enhancements. Click here for details.

Let me know if you check all of this and still see the erratic behavior with the icons.

Thanks very much!
