If I Can Do It, You Can Too...Variables

Feb 24, 2016

I just felt like sharing this course that I am creating for my company.

As of last week, I had anxiety (no joke) anytime I thought of the word "variable".  I was not going to give up but it was definitely an uphill (psych myself out type of) challenge to overcome these pesky variables.

I want to give a shout out to Zsolt, and let him know that through his video "Making of a Murderer...with variables" that he posted recently, something finally clicked.  His video got through to me, specifically the variable's line "I didn't pull the trigger, I'm just a variable"...it was like a million lightbulbs finally turned on in my head.

And, to prove this, I created this "gamified" course and wanted to share, especially for those who can identify with the anxiety of the "v" word.

This game is to help learners understand that the company will get fined $500 per customer if they don't "click" on them.  If you click on the customer, you get to keep the company's money.  If you don't click on a customer, your company loses $500 per customer.

I wanted to get the Rocket (the competitor) to climb higher as our own company loses money but, haven't figured that out yet.

Check the course out if you want, and let me know what you think.

Dana,

Thanks for sharing your example! So cool that you've finally gotten around to using variables and have discovered they're not that intimidating, once you kinda "get" them. Woohoo! Love to hear these types of stories.

Your example is really cool! Very fun game concept! One tip, or piece of feedback, from me. I would include on-screen instructions for the learner about what they have to do and why the number is going down.

For the rocket... you'll probably want to use a combo of states and maybe some variables? There's always more than one way to do something in Storyline... that's the fun, right!?

Thanks Nicole,

Man I was so intimidated but I hope to be a variable pro at some point :)  Thanks for the feedback.  This is actually one of 3 activities that I will be adding to the course - instructions will be added for each.  I was just too excited to show my accomplishment (with variables) to wait for the course to be done before I added it into the Articulate community.  :)
