Whenever my team voice content it comes out quite quiet, even when the voice artist is shouting! We then have to go through EVERY piece of voice and increase the sound level by about 2 or 3 times.... ANY idea how to make sure it records at this level in the first place??? thanks Clare
Hi Clare, you probably need to make sure that your mic input is set to a good level in the first place. Depending on your version of WIndows, you would need to access the sound properties and increase the input level there. Not being sure of your Windows version, I can't give you exact directions but this link might help: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Setting_Recording_Input_Level#Sound_under_MS_Windows
Robert's right. Sounds as though your voiceover talent has the mic settings too low. When recording, the voice track should be peaking around -3db for a nice loud and clear sound.
Thanks so much for this, the link worked and I am praying that the next batch that come through are louder, last nights lot I had to increase 10 times (max amount you can do) just for them to be heard and that on a quiz with 13 questions and responces is not fun!!! Thanks for the help.
Not sure if you are using a standard recording software like Audition or ProTools, but if so, you can use batch processing if you need to increase/manipulate levels on large numbers of files (like your 13 questions and responses). That'll allow you to set the levels on a whole bunch of files at once. I'd die without batch processing -- especially since I do voiceover for projects that sometimes have over 1000 files!
She can batch process in the audio editor as well CC. But only in Presenter. In Quizmaker, even if she batch processes, she still has to re-insert them one by one. Plus, you know better than us that editing an audio track that was recording poorly in the first place is usually more trouble than just getting it done right the first time .
@Robert -- You are absolutely correct! Trying to "fix up" bad audio can be more frustrating and costly than just outsourcing it again to a qualified professional. Besides just being technically proficient and providing a good quality "hard" product, a pro should deliver your content in an engaging way. No wonder "Articulate" and "Captivate" have those names... the combined visual, content, and audio should be well articulated and captivating to the end user! People often resent having to spend time on elearning; our job is to make it something that engages them!
Thanks so much for this help, no I am not using any 'standard software, just good old Articulate and yes I did loose the will to live... have jumped up and down at the voicing team (we are doing this in 9 languages!!!) so have got them looking at the settings (thanks for the tips) and have trained THEM to look and see if it is loud enough BEFORE sending to me.... and guess what, I am back drinking wine and being nice again... THANK YOU ALLLLLLL for saving my sanity!!!
If you're outsourcing you can also try recording with Audacity. It's free and you really got a bunch of option with it. moreover you can set the limit and the level of the voice.

Good luck!
