Storyline Vs. Online eLearning tools

Nov 16, 2015

Hi all,

I'm new to this and could really use your help. I'm an instructional designer and so far only worked with Moodle. I have a new job now and soon they are implementing Oracle Taleo in the company, which I know absolutely nothing about. Also, in other departments I heard people talking about purchasing a Storyline license. I thought this could also be beneficial for my department. Can anyone please explain to me what are the advantages of Storyline over online eLearning tools?

This will be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hi Savannah,

using these online Elearning tools, which are integrated in LMS-applications offer you a very limited range of possibilities.

Storyline has a timeline, you can use different interactive elements (triggers) and you can work with graphics.

Means: With these online eLearning tools you can deliver static content and you can easily create questions.

But:

if you want to create interactive content (which is more than using a continue-button) and fancy-looking content you should use Articulate Storyline.

From my personal experience I know that these LMS-generated content has the tendency to look equal on every slide because you only have reduced features.

Best regards

Ralf

A point of clarification that may help you.

An LMS is a tool that you can load courses to. It's primary function is to organize, allow for assignments, and track learner progress and completion.

An authoring tool is something you actually create the courses in, then typically upload to (or host on) an LMS.

Moodle is both an LMS and essentially an authoring tool. You can actually create courses on Moodle, that then the LMS side of Moodle tracks and does all the admin pieces of it.

Most LMS' on the market only host courses you create outside of the LMS, and don't have a built in authoring tool.

Taleo has an extremely extremely limited course "creation" ability from what I recall, so you will typically need to create courses in an external software (e.g. Articulate Storyline) and upload it to the Taleo LMS.

Thanks Rachel! I do know the difference between the two, however I appreciate your clarification. I was asking about authoring tools as I understand other LMS' don't really provide a built-in authoring tool (I'm gonna miss Moodle!). Thank you for the information about Taleo. I know realise I can't rely on it to create eLearning and will learn more about Storyline, as it seems like the best solution for our needs.

Hi, Venu -- Thanks for reaching out with your input, and I see that you shared a similar opinion over here regarding Taleo Learn, so I wanted to be sure to link the 2 threads for anyone who is following along. I also wanted to mention that you are welcome to reach out to any of the participants in this thread directly using the 'Contact Me' link on their profile page (as they may no longer be subscribed to this thread).
