What industry sector do you work in?

Dec 06, 2011

Hi all.

I always enjoy looking at profiles to see if contributers have listed where they're from - geographically and industry - not everyone lists this info though.

So - what kind of industries do you work in? I'm curious to know what areas have embraced e-Learning the most. I've noticed a lot of posts from people in the Healthcare sector here.

I've mostly worked in telecommunications, and implemented e-Learning frameworks (off the shelf and customised) in a couple of those companies. Now I'm in the world of insurance, and creating customised courses here.

Cheers,

Sarah.

The company I work for does business automation as well as physical and electronic security mostly for financial institutions (ATMs and software are our bread and butter). Most of the stuff I develop is to support  6k-7k service technicians we have running around the globe who install, service and repair the equipment.

I'm currently based in Canton, OH but have bounced around for the company over the years.

Hi Sarah, this is actually a great discussion you have going here, lots of great replies! I actually work in Northeast Ohio as a consultant, and lately we've been working on e-learning courses with energy companies, healthcare, higher education, and manufacturing. From the time I began consulting on training in general (four years ago) until  now, the number of clients who are requesting elearning or blended learning in leiu of manuals and ILTs has grown exponentially. I think the next wave of elearning will definitely be going mobile!

I am currently based in Abu Dhabi working as the Safety & Quality Training Manager for Etihad Airways.

Implemented the Learning Management System for the company and drove the initial development of E-learning courses, majority of them developed in-house using Articulate Studios.

Some of my e-learning work is here http://www.mashrur.com/portfolio/

Does anyone else have portfolios online?

Hey Mashrur!  I had a look over at your site and your stuff is really really nice.  I love that you use a very clean look to your designs.

I have ALWAYS wanted to fly Etihad!  I'm a Star Alliance flyer, so I normally stick with Star carriers.... I have top status with two of the Star airlines and cannot bear to fly in coach when I can upgrade to biz or first normally for free.

Maybe one day I'll give it a shot!

Hi everyone!

I am a graphic, web, eLearning designer, and developer out of Phoenix Arizona.  I have been working consultant jobs for credit card companies, large international solar company, and a large trading company. At  some of these companies I was the only designer/developer and in others I was part of a large team.  One thing I find strange is that no matter where I am or have been I have the most experience using Articulate to build the eLearning courses I'm involved with and love it.

CC I'm so glad you posted this question.  This has been very interesting.

Hi Sarah, Thanks for asking this question, it is interesting to read the answers.

I currently work in the healthcare industry, for a health system that owns hospitals and medical facilities across the midwest. We employ varied positions from truck drivers to physicians. Consequently course content ranges from disease management to supply chain management. I used to work in the financial services industry where I created courseware for retirement products, mutual funds, annuities and insurance. I've only been an internal corporate e-learning instructional designer and haven't done contract work yet.

Hi

I'm in Guildford, Surrey, in the United Kingdom. Looking back, most of my experience is focused around two main industry sectors; Software and Telecommunications. And I now specialise in Business Intelligence products and services - so anything to do with database reporting, analysis of data, data mining, that type of thing. I guess I've stayed in these areas because I know these types of technologies really thoroughly.

I have tended to be more successful in dealing with larger scale technology roll outs - you know, where the software company develops a new release of their product and the user base or reseller/partner channel needs to be trained.

I seem to have been designing, building and delivering courseware for over 15 years in these two sectors - though it feels like a lot less than that - as there is always something new to learn that keeps things fresh...

I'm working in Leeds, UK as an eLearning Specialist for a languages company. It's mostly internal work - creating compliance training, onboarding materials etc, but I get involved in some pretty exciting projects too. We have no LMS, so I've created a solution using articulate that reports from  a presentation via asp to a database. When I started here, there was no eLearning, and now, nearly 2 years later, we have an eLearning suite full of useful content for the business on an internal HR website, which I also built.

We get busier by the day, so I constantly try t reinvent myself, which is why my solutions these days comprise of a mixture of Articulate, Flash, Web resources, video and Captivate for systems training.

Never a dull moment in the world of L&D! People think I just play all day!!

i work for a firm that provides best practices research and advisory services to businesses worldwide. The e-learning that I create is largely focused on management and practitioners in the human resources, talent management, and learning and development sectors.

Hi all,

I'm in Antwerp, Belgium (that's in Europe) and I work for a shipping company called Safmarine Container Lines.

In 2010 we implemented a completely new CRM system for our 720 sales staff in 105 countries world wide.  Since we wanted everyone to be trained as quickly as possible, we opted for a functional eLearning course which was followed by coaching on the job.  It worked out very well because I only had to retrain 3 out of 105 countries   And this mostly thanks to Tom Kuhlman and his Rapid Elearning.

I work for Lockheed Martin as an eLearning developer in the homeland security arena. My immediate group consists of myself and 2 other eLearning developers, and a team of a dozen or so instructional designers. More than half of the IDs focus on ILT, and my role when working with them is mainly graphic design and putting together PowerPoint templates. The other half of the group work on designing online courseware... It's a fun and very fast-paced team, and we work on many high-profile projects. Oh, and I'm a virtual employee, residing in Virginia Beach. Most of my team is in Washington DC.

I work in London UK, in the non-profit health and social care sector. We are a (now) large company supporting people with learning disabilities and mental health needs. We've only recently just purchased two licenses of articulate storyline (last month) to design our own elearning. E-Learning has always been a large aspect of our compliance training but we used off the shelf courses. Now we gradually want to re-design most of our health and safety related courses. And i'm looking forward to designing mental health awareness courses. I already do quite a bit of classroom training on the subject.

I am from Dublin, Ireland and have just completed the Responsible Serving of Alcohol e-learning programme for bar staff here. Had to built the lot from scratch as there were no resources for this kind of programme.. Id be happy to share some templates with other countries in the same area, see my demo...   http://bit.ly/RSA-Online-Training
