Hi Kaitlin,
You will need a separate captions file for each slide. Specifically, a captions file is "attached" to either an audio object or a video object. Since neither of those objects transcends the slide boundary, then the associated captions files won't either.
What is helpful is the auto-import feature of captions files that have the same name as their associated audio or video object. As long as that captions file lives in the same directory as the audio/video that you are importing, the captions file import process will be automatic.
