Using Pantone's Greenery in E-Learning #154: Challenge | Recap

Pantone just announced their 2017 color of the year! The color is Greenery and Pantone calls it a “refreshing and revitalizing shade, symbolic of new beginnings.”
\n
Now that next year's color is locked in, course designers can start playing with creative ways to work this “trans-seasonal” shade into their e-learning projects. And that’s what this week’s e-learning challenge is all about!

Greenery Color Pairings
\n
Choosing and working with colors can be one of the stickier challenges for course designers. This is equally true for projects where clients prescribe a color palette as well as situations when designers are free to work with any colors they choose.
\n
Of all the color challenges we’ve hosted, Greenery feels like the easiest one to use. I’m guessing Pantone thinks so, too. They shared 10 recommended color pairing palettes to help designers get started with Greenery.

Learn to Work with Tints and Shades
\n
One of the easiest and safest ways to create a color palette is to start with a base color and use tint and shade values for the secondary colors.
\n
Tints are created by mixing values of white with your base color while shades are created by mixing values of black.
\n
Here’s an example of how tints and shades can be used to change your base color.
\n
\n
Using a Single Color for Your E-Learning Courses
\n
The tints and shades approach works so well, you could build an entire course using a base color and 2-3 tints and shades.
\n
Tints and shades can be used to establish your type hierarchy and accent colors for graphic elements. Here’s a super quick mockup I put together using one of the illustrated templates from Content Library:

Challenge of the Week
\n
This week your challenge is to design an e-learning template or interaction using Greenery as the primary color.
\n
Your slides can be static or built out as working interactions. Your goal is to work from a single color and show how you will carry that color across your design templates.
\n
NOTE: Your entry can be anything from a rough concept to a polished example. The challenges are open to everyone, regardless of experience or skill level. If you need technical or creative help with your project, please ask in our forums and reference the challenge number you’re working on.
