As well as improving the legibility and contrast of your designs, blurred backgrounds can also be used to imply motion or movement. In this demo, I've used blurred backgrounds to illustrate a futuristic method of transportation.

I read this book once (fiction) where they explained that transporter actually cloned the traveller at the destination and uploaded all of their memories into the new version. The old version (or the original if this is their first time travelling) is actually disintigrated with the beam.
This might explain for the 'clone effect' they talked about in the show, if their were a malfunction on the disintigration side you would end up with two copies of the same 'person'.
