Hi Jodi! I really like this idea of communicating with new hires and keeping them engaged before they start. However, the one thing that came to mind was compensation, were new hires compensated for the time they spent taking the course?

Hi Maren,
No, we didn't compensate them because they weren't officially on board yet. We used SL to develop quick-hit communication pieces as part of a broader communication plan. I used to call them "love notes"--just quick messages to let them know they were on our mind. I'd be glad to chat with you separately about some of the things we did if you are creating a communication plan. SL and Rise were just convenient vehicles we used that could be developed quickly and pulsed out. I used SL a lot for things other than training and would be glad to tell you about it.

My business partner Jill and I sometimes use SL for invitations to big offsite meetings, pre-meeting teaser games, post-meeting follow ups, and change management communications. We just post them on the web instead of in an LMS and we use other ways to track them. We did some fun things for a NYC media company last spring in a "getting back into the office" communication plan.
