One of the major things I have learned is that you should never give away too much of your IP / knowledge before the client signs on the dotted line.
Giving away knowledge to sell or market your expertise is a poor marketing tool.

Good point, Robbie. Another freelancer just asked me if I'd ever been asked to do any demos or work on spec. I can't imagine why I'd agree to solve someone's problem and give away my ideas for free, but apparently there are people who aren't afraid to ask.
