Using Confirmation Prompts to Ask Learners, “Are You Sure?” in E-Learning #555

You know the answer. At least you think you do.

But you’re halfway through a required course, your inbox is filling up, and you click the first option that looks right so you can move on.

Instead of going directly to the Correct/Incorrect feedback like every other quiz you've taken, a pop-up asks, “Are you sure?”

In that half-second pause, something useful happens: you actually check your work.

And sometimes that’s all it takes.

A well-placed “Are you sure?” prompt gives learners a chance to slow down, reconsider, and catch their own mistakes before it’s too late.

That’s the real value of confirmation prompts in course design.

They’re not trying to trick learners. They’re there to help. And helping learners slow down and reflect on their choices is what this week’s e-learning challenge is all about.

🏆 Challenge of the Week

This week, your challenge is to design an interaction that uses a confirmation prompt to encourage learners to pause and reflect before submitting their answers.

You can use “Are you sure?” or any phrase that fits your example.

I like “Are you sure?” because it gently challenges learners to reconsider their choice. Some other prompts that work include:

  • “Think so?”
  • “You sure about that?”
  • “That’s your answer?”
  • “Sticking with that?”
  • “Final answer?”

✨ Share Your E-Learning Work

You put in the effort, now make sure your work gets seen:

  • Blog it: Post your example in the recap hub and tell us how you tackled the challenge. With the new submission format, you can comment directly on each example. Try leaving helpful feedback on at least three projects this week.
  • Share it: Please share your examples on LinkedIn and mention both David & Articulate using the #ElearningChallenge tags so we can help promote your work.
  • Discuss it: Feel free to cross-post in the forums to give your work even more visibility.
