A favorite free tool that no one has mentioned yet that is especially helpful for authoring in Articulate products is Windows SyncToy 2.1: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155
Here's why: It allows me to work from my hard drive without the worry of losing my data if my hard drive crashes. I use it to back up all of my Articulate files (that I work on from the hard drive per the recommendation from Articulate) nightly to a folder on our network drive. It syncs whatever is in my local computer's work folder with the one I have set up on the network.
What's even cooler is using Window's built-in Task Scheduler in conjunction with SyncToy -- you can have it run SyncToy on a schedule.
