360 interaction suggestions

Some suggestions for Storyline 360 image interactions:

  • Let us position labels. If I create a label for a hotspot, it overlaps the hotspot, meaning I can't click on part of that hotspot (and the user can't even see that part), which rather defeats the purpose. Also, I might want the label to not cover part of the 360 image, but now I can't move it.
  • Allow placing images/shapes/etc. in the 360 environment. For instance, I might want an arrow pointing at a button or a door. In the current system, this is not possible.
  • Allow scripted view direction changes. For instance, if I enter a room from the north, I should be facing south. If I enter the room from the west, I should be facing east. This could either be literal scripting (JavaScript) or a pre-entry event with triggers.

I've mentioned one of these in another thread, but ....

Any other customers want to add your suggestions below?

OK, I just found by fiddling around that you can set the initial view in an interaction easily with the Initial View panel, Edit button.

Unless you're doing a guided tour. Then you can't.

    What? Why?

It appears that guided tours always put the first "station" of the tour (marker or hotspot) in the exact center of the viewport. That's a fine default, but what if I want to override it? Answer: tough luck.

Another suggestion for 360 images in Tour mode: add a trigger for buttons in an interaction to navigate to a particular station of the tour. Say, a Next button and a Previous button that could be in each label. Even better, let me drop a button directly in the 360 environment, so I can create a navigation menu. (The buttons would be on a layer above the 360 interaction and remain in a stable on-screen location even if you rotate the 360 image.)

Continuing my comment-thread length record attempt: I realized that I could build my menu on a layer above the 360 image, but of course, that can't affect anything inside the interaction. In general, and in my opinion, the 360 interactions should be better integrated with the rest of Storyline.

  • Hi CarlFink1,

Thanks for taking the time to share the detailed feedback on 360° interactions in Storyline!

I can certainly see the value these enhancements could bring. Especially around greater authoring flexibility, programmable navigation behavior, and deeper integration of 360 interactions within Storyline’s broader UI system. I’ve relayed your insights directly to our product team, so they can consider these ideas for future updates.

Have a great rest of your week!
