Can "NEVER" create simulated hands-on-training using Storyline 360!

For the life of me, I can "NEVER" create simulated hand-on-training using Articulate 360 even though it is advertised as a feature of Storyline! Is that also the reason, Articulate publishes demo videos but NOT  A SINGLE hands on tutorial that you can point, click and carryout actions. Somethings are better learned "DOING" not "VIEWING".

A bit of transparency goes a long way with users/subscribers to the software who pay a premium. Although, I have a disdain for Adobe's Captivate, it is one thing it does excel in, simulated training.

Why can't you guys just admit it and put the issue to rest and stop advertising if the feature does not work. Or  better yet, don't reinvent the wheel, Buy a Company that excels in this feature and add it to Articulate's offering and offer an unconditional apology to those Articulate has caused frustration and hardship. You will build more trust with users/subscribers by being HONEST. Also, if does work, why on earth there is not a single hands-on-tutorial for simulated learning that you guys have. If you have, where are you hiding it, as I'd sure like to see something I have been searching online for 4 years!

Thank you and look forward to your response and guidance. REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THOSE HANDS-ON-TUTORIALs that you guys have somewhere in hiding.

  • Storyline can record your screens and you can also build really good simulated training. In fact the team that built the original Captivate built Storyline.

I have never needed a tutorial to do this, it is very simple to do, they do have KB articles

Thank you Phil. Appreciate your response and the link. Does it matter if the the screen you are recording is on an external monitor attached to your laptop and not the main screen. Intuitively, I'd like to say - No, but checking just in-case.

    Thanks again.

  • I don't know I have always screen recorded from a desktop but have used both the primary and secondary monitors.

Apologies in advance for the follow-up....part of my question was I can never find any tutorial with hands-on practice (simulated tutorial)? What gives? For a company that makes premier software for e-learning...but all their videos  and tutorials are demos...doesn't that strike odd? Not a single hands-on tutorial? If there are, I'd sure like to see them?

      Hello NomdeGuerre,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I can hear how frustrating that experience has been, especially when you’re looking for more hands-on, step-by-step guidance.

Storyline 360 does support creating simulated, hands-on training using screen recordings and step-by-step interactions. That said, I understand your point that many of the available resources are video or guide-based, and there are fewer structured, follow-along walkthroughs where you can build something step by step.

I see PhilMayor has already shared a helpful article on getting started with screen recordings. I’ll also share your feedback with our training team, as that kind of guided, learn-by-doing content can be really valuable when getting started with features like simulations.

  • You will get a second I don't know, Linkedin Learning has a lot of tutorials, there are webinars on here, however i believe you are right there is a distinct lack of walk-through type tutorials.

  • I definitely hear how frustrating Storyline has been for you. I'd like to offer some clarification that may help.

Storyline can create software simulations--I've done it myself many times with great success--but it works differently than tools that specialize exclusively in that function, like WalkMe. Storyline's approach is intentionally more flexible and open-ended than a dedicated simulation engine like Captivate's. That flexibility is great for custom interactivity (which I love creating) but it does mean the workflow isn't as rigid as some might hope.

My experience matches yours with most of Articulate's guidance constituting short, targeted lessons rather than full software simulations. I expect this is in part because the platform changes often, and as someone who has made many software simulations, updating or replacing outdated ones can be a large time sink. Additionally, since the platform is so flexible and open-ended, more complex simulations of Storyline would very likely be too narrow for broad use, appealing to only a handful of users. Step-by-step, scenario-driven simulation tutorials are my favorite form of training so they would be a boon for Storyline.

Your comment about struggling for years suggests there may be something specific in your workflow, settings, or recording process that’s getting in the way. Simulation creation in Storyline involves several moving parts--recording area, capture settings, browser/display DPI, default action configuration, etc.--and sometimes a small mismatch can lead to unexpected results. If you’re open to it, the community and support team are great at helping pinpoint these details. Many users who initially had trouble found that once these settings were aligned, the simulation features worked reliably.

It’s fair to expect clear communication about a platform's capabilities. I promise Storyline’s simulation features do work and they’re used broadly across the industry, but Storyline is not intended to mirror Captivate’s one‑purpose simulation engine.
