I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue. Using the slide master allows you to apply a consistent background design to your slides, so each slide you add will inherit the layout of the parent slide.
One thing you could try is to create a custom template instead of using the master slide. Once you build the course the way you'd like, you can save it for future use.
