Everything we know about Cornerstone on Demand and Storyline!
Hello everybody.
In order of my last post, I would like to explain better which is our problem.
We have developed some trainings using "Storyline2". This trainings are running into CORNERSTONE and it seems that are working correctly for everybody except for a few people that have the following issue:
They complete the training (view all the slides and if the training has a quiz they also pass this quiz). The result's slide tell to the learner that he/she complete correctly the course but, when they close the training, Cornerstone don't track correctly this information and the training is keeping into the "incompleted" tab. I mean, the status does not change to "Complete" and it is allways in the "Active" tab.
Please, could you help me and tell me what can I do to solve this problemm?
Many thanks for your help
Hi Francisco,
We have had this issue as well with some users. It didn't matter what browser they used or what computer operating platform. However, we found that for our users, the people who saw this issue were also the ones who had the module open on their computer for more than 1 hour. This is pretty typical of our learners, since people are often pulled away from their desks or their modules due to meetings or other work. These users "timed out" of the Cornerstone LMS, but they didn't see the small pop up warning them they would be logged out. And so, they would finish their module as usual and then close it out, but because they had timed out already, Cornerstone did not capture their score or progress. Some learners who experienced this issue also reported that their internet was disconnected for a short time, perhaps when traveling from their desk to another location in the office, or when their VPN got disconnected unexpectedly. This caused the same Cornerstone timeout issue.
You may like to run a few tests to see if this is the case for your learners who experience the issue. Maybe they will also remember if they got disconnected from their wireless network?
We have spoken with Cornerstone about this issue and unfortunately we can't change the time-out duration (I think the default is one hour). We've opted to add a small popup disclaimer at the beginning of our modules, warning learners to watch the time and close out of the module and refresh the Cornerstone Transcript each hour to ensure that their work gets saved. It's unfortunately a tedious workaround for our learners but it gets the job done. Due to the nature of their jobs, we can't expect our learners to always have 100% of their time dedicated to the module if they need to take a client call, etc. Hope this helps.

Lulu this is very helpful to know. Do you know if
1) the 1 hour countdown is reset if the user is interacting with the module? e.g. if I watch a video on a slide for fifteen minutes (dropping me down to 45 minutes left), but then I click the next button in the Storyline module, does the CSOD time-out clock reset back to an hour before time-out? Or does it mean...
2) that as soon as you launch the module, you have 1 hour no matter what you do within the module before CSOD issues the timeout warning?

Hi Will,
It is the latter - as soon as you launch the module, you have 1 hour before CSOD issues the warning. Because Storyline publishes as a Flash object, whatever you do in the object isn't recognized in CSOD until you close out and the SCORM package sends data to CSOD. During that hour, if you happen to go back into CSOD and maybe look at something in your transcript, or click on a link, etc, then the timer will reset. But as long as you're only interacting within the Storyline Flash object, CSOD will count down.
That said, I don't know what happens if you publish Storyline only as HTML5 and then upload that object into CSOD. That'd be worth a test!

Thanks for this info Lulu. I learned something useful on the CSOD forums. There is an enhancement coming out in this coming CSOD February release called Online Course Timeout Enhancement. This should help users extend their time available in the course without having to go the the portal:
https://help.csod.com/help/csod_0/OnlineHelp.htm#0_Whats_New/171/LMS/Online_Course_Timeout_Enhancement/Online_Course_Timeout_Enhancement.htm
One of the use cases: "Jennifer is an employee at a healthcare organization who needs to take the First Aid Awareness course. Jennifer launches the course, which opens in a new window, and the system begins to count down based on the portal’s timeout configuration. When the session is about to expire, the online course timeout notification appears. Jennifer chooses to continue the course session, and the system resets the timer for both the online course window and for the parent window of the application."
I found out about this new feature in this very useful discussion here:
