I clearly missed the append check box when versioning so now my users see both versions. Can I deactivate or remove the prior version without re-versioning again?
You would have entered an start date. On the start date the old version should be inactivated. In the course console on the initial version you should see a "Version End Date" that was configured from the "Start Date" field in versioning.
Do you show both versions active in the catalog? Depending on which dates you selected for Start and Effective, you may and you can edit the old version and inactivate.
Only two Online Course version can be active at the same so if you don't see both versions because one is pending, you could certainly reversion and put the effective date and start date today so that only the new version is available.
For my issue I found an interesting work around. If you start a new version of a course where there are already 2 versions, you will get a pop-up asking you which existing version you wish to retire. Once you've made that selection, you can then cancel out of versioning and *poof* you are down to one active course.
