Sorry you ran into this snag! We are currently tracking an issue wherein the Player's Play/Pause button is unable to pause the timeline of slide layers. This means that the Play/Pause in the Player can only pause the timeline of objects that have been placed on the base layer. I've added this forum to the bug report so we can notify you as soon as a fix is released.
As a workaround, consider moving all of the objects in your slide layers to the base layers or adding a custom pause button to your slides.
In this screenshot for example, you can transfer all of the contents in the 'Blurb & Character' layer to the base layer, and it will not effect the functionality of the slide.
