Thanks for the continued followup!
I updated Chrome as you suggested. And my missing "i's" returned. Checking deeper, after Miker had explained that the hardware acceleration feature in version 59 was a default I should turn off, I checked its setting after the update to v.60 - it was still off.
1) The Chrome update does not effect that setting.
2) I set the switch for hardware acceleration back to on (as would be the default).
3) The "i's" were still good.
So, v.60 - regardless of the default setting for hardware acceleration seems to solve "The Mystery of the Disappearing Lowercase i's"... !
