this should depend on the LMS and the type of communication
- xAPI: should work without problems without using popup
- Scorm: communication between LMS and training works - as far as I know - via the 'window.opener' - which is only guaranteed via popup.
But maybe admins of LMS systems are reading this forum and could help or maybe the developers of your LMS have a workaround for this problem.
If user tracking is not necessary you can of course start the training via "story.html" - without popup.
