Hi Graham. I'm with Phil in that I like your instruction animations a lot but also wonder if your particular audience needs them given how similar your UI is to so many others your users may encounter.
I've seen a few people tuck instructions like this into a navigation tab in the course player. That way, people who understand the UI right away don't have to see them, but people who are confused have an easy-to-find resource to help. That may be a good solution if your audience runs from tech savvy to tech newbie.

On reflection, and based on what all these comments have said, I'm going to keep these UI instructions, but tuck them away.
My content is definitely going out to a mixed level of tech savviness, so I want to get the balance right.
