How can I view layers added to a video to determine placement of added symbols/etc.?

As you've discovered, Storyline isn't designed to allow editing a layer while viewing the base at a specific point in the timeline.
One simple workaround would be to do this:
- Pause the base timeline at the appropriate point.
- Add and/or adjust Guides to indicate where the object on the layer should appear or point to. (The checkbox for showing Guides is on the VIEW ribbon.)
- On the layer, add the desired object so it "fits" to the Guides.
- Repeat as needed for each layer.
Or just add and position a given object on the base layer, and then cut and paste it onto the appropriate layer.
Keep in mind that the FORMAT ribbon shows X & Y coordinates. Those can also come in handy for precise positioning.
I've set the layers correctly for the user experience (following other guides!) so I don't have a problem with how they behave while being played back - my issue is in the editing/design view.
How can I see the base layer, at the corresponding cue point, while actively editing the layer above (that has the arrows or circles)? I don't see anything in the link you provided, unfortunately (thank you for posting it, though) - the base layer IS set to visible. The problem is that even if I go to the base layer and advance it to the needed cue point, once I click to the arrow layer, the base layer view reverts back to the beginning.
Hi, The problem could be any number things. Can you attach the story file? Seeing how you set it up it would make it easier to troubleshoot.
I made a VERY rough example of what I am trying to do. I'm not worried about the audio cut-outs when the base layer pauses; I'll record those tracks separately on the actual project or just narrate appropriately.
My problem is that when I advance the base/video layer to the cue point where I want the shape to appear, and then click on the corresponding layer to try to place the shape exactly (pointing at or circling the thing I want to emphasize), the base layer reverts back to the beginning and I can't see where the shape needs to go.Arrrrrgh the file won't attach. I'm sorry. I'll try some screenshots tomorrow. Thank you for replying.
My video is a screengrab of me scrolling through a document. For the example, I took a video of me scrolling through a Cheesecake Factory menu, lol.
In this first screenshot, I have advanced the video layer to my first cue point (#2). I want to use the next layer to overlay a circle around "Quesadilla".Now, I have selected the Quesadilla Circle layer to determine its placement. But as you can see, the video base layer has reverted to the beginning of the video (top of the menu) so I can't see exactly where the word Quesadilla is. If I click back to the video base layer, it is still at Cue Point #2, where I left it. But when working on the other layers, the underlying base layer view defaults back to the beginning:
I need the video base layer that peeks through to stay where I left it, so I can see where the next layer(s) need to go. I hope this makes sense. Thank you!
