Keyboard navigation for developer: next slide

Not in the player, note. I want to be able to navigate to the next slide in the development environment. Storyline is pretty clearly emulating PowerPoint - why would you not use PgDn for "next slide"? It isn't as if PgDn is being used for something else? (Just in case it's not obvious, PgUp should be "previous slide".)

Is there another way to get to the next slide without finicky mouse movements? Keyboard nav is much easier and more familiar.

I did search this forum, but all I got were lots of shortcuts to use in the player

Thanks.

  • Good evening!

I am seeing the same thing, PgUp and PgDn are not working for moving between slides.

But, in development mode, I am having success with the arrow keys (num pad arrows and the direction keys).

Not exactly the same, but its a work around. Are those working for you?

Thanks, Leslie. That's very useful. Also a poor design choice, in my professional opinion, for two reasons:

      1. It is nonstandard for no reason. This demonstrably will confuse people, and paradoxically will confuse experienced people more than beginners.
      2. If I'm using arrow keys to nudge selected objects and accidentally try it while nothing is selected, I will find myself five slides away (I tend to tap very fast when nudging) and have no idea what's going on.

Four years later and still no way to do this? Again, PgUp and PgDn currently do nothing, so nothing is lost by letting them work, if you'll pardon my saying so, the normal way. I'm a mediocre software dev at best, and I could add that feature in a day, I'm pretty sure.

        Hi CarlFink1

Thank you for checking back in about this.

You’re correct that PgUp and PgDn aren’t currently assigned in the Storyline authoring environment. I understand why using those keys for previous and next slide would feel intuitive and aligned with other tools.

I’ve confirmed that this request is documented with our product team. While we don’t have changes to share at this time, your note has been added to the existing request so the team can see continued interest.

In recent years, much of our keyboard development work has focused on improving accessibility for learners in published training. We haven’t expanded keyboard navigation in this area of the authoring environment yet.

As a practical option in the meantime, if you open the group of slides you’re working on so they appear as tabs, you can use Ctrl + Page Up and Ctrl + Page Down to move left and right between those tabs. This can make moving between slides faster without relying on the mouse. I’ve recorded a short video to demonstrate this.
