Storyline - Order changing when pasting
I've noticed a recent change in behaviour when copying and pasting grouped items into slides.
We use a grouped item for navigation, which consists of an arrow icon from the icon library and a white oval which is placed behind the icon. These two items are then grouped together.
When copying and pasting these groups into slides, the order of the group is being changed, placing the white oval in front of the arrow icon. It is easy to resolve by dragging the oval to sit behind the icon in the timeline, but it is time consuming having to do this each time on a new slide.
This has only recently started to happen, so I'm not sure if this has been caused by anything in a recent update. We are using version 3.114.36655.0
I've attached a few images to show what is happening.

How frustrating! I couldn't replicate the problem, so it's hard to say why it might be happening.
There is a simple solution: don't use a group. Instead, insert the icon directly into the Normal state of the oval shape. In other words, add it while you're editing the states of the oval. Then you'll only have one object to deal with.
Note: To avoid focus-order issues, turn off the icon's visibility in the Accessibility window. Then you'll only need to add alt text for the oval.
Hi PhilCobbold,
I see what you’re running into here, and I agree with Judy that her approach is a solid workaround, especially if you’re using this as a consistent navigation element.
I also tried to replicate this behavior using your version and the latest build, and the object order stayed consistent after pasting. That suggests this may be something specific to your environment rather than a general change in behavior.
A couple of things you might try:
- Running a Storyline repair to rule out any installation issues
- Making sure you’re working from your local drive rather than a network or synced folder, as that can sometimes cause unexpected behavior
If the issue continues after that, it would be a good idea to reach out to our support team so they can take a closer look at your setup.
