WebM Video in Storyline
We shipped a recent Storyline 360 update that added support for WebM video, but also introduced a behind-the-scenes change: we started making copies of MP4 videos in the WebM format. The goal was to make video playback inside the app more reliable. MP4 support has always been a bit of a tightrope for us because the format sits on top of a tangle of proprietary codecs and licensing constraints. That makes it tough to keep Storyline’s internal playback components modern and stable. WebM, on the other hand, is open, predictable, and much easier for us to support.
Once this change landed in real projects, though, the side effects became obvious: it's confusing and can lead to projects carrying both formats when you never asked for that.
So here’s what we’re doing: we've rolled back the automatic conversion in an update that was released this morning. You can still import WebM videos if you want them, we just won’t force the format switch on your behalf.
If you ran into this and spoke up, thank you. That feedback helped us adjust fast and rethink our approach.

Can you please clarify what this means for projects that were saved using last week's update? Are the videos in those files still in both formats? Will the new update revert them back?
CarolDungan-c47 a future update (likely within the next few weeks) will remove the duplicated WebM videos for any projects that had them, leaving just the original MP4 videos.

Hi Jesse,
EDIT:
OK, this was a response to the first post you wrote ysterday. will install the rollback as soon as I see it and play around with wpbm format to see if it is manageable. My version of Camtasia does not have it AFAIK. Will see if they have an extension I can install (like a Codec or so?)
FelixFranke the version that rolls this back is already available: 3.106.35891.0
I can't speak to Camtasia's WebM capabilities, but if it can create a WebM video you'll be able to put into Storyline!

Hi Jesse,
after writing that post I saw that the rollback was already out and edited my post. Thank you! I am not generally against webm, but not being in control what happens with my files was a bit disconcerting...
Turns out Camtasia does not export webm files in the version I have... Might have to get familiar with Davinci Resolve (Oooh, pandoras box... 😉)

The build 3.106.35838.0 update was causing me problems: videos would freeze when I tried to watch them in either slide view or preview mode.
Fortunately, build 3.106.35891.0 seems to have solved the problem.
Please be more cautious and careful when releasing new features.
