Block Course Progress When Offline
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice on how to handle internet connection loss in both Rise 360 and Storyline 360.
Our requirement is that if the learner loses their internet connection while taking a SCORM course, the course should immediately stop and prevent the learner from progressing. Once the internet connection is restored, the learner should be able to continue from where they left off.
The main goal is to make sure learners cannot continue through mandatory/compliance training while offline, as the LMS data will also be used for reporting and audit purposes.
What settings or development would be required to achieve this in:
- Rise 360
- Storyline 360
Is there a native setting for this, or would it require custom JavaScript or modification of the published SCORM package?
Thanks in advance for any advice or examples.

Storyline already has that as an option in the Player Properties:
I don't know of any way to create that effect in Rise though, especially since it seems to be becoming an always-on kind of deal.

Storyline side is covered — Andrew's pointing at the Player Properties option that pauses the course when the connection drops. One practical note for your audit requirement: that setting stops the learner, but nothing reaches the LMS while they're offline either way. SCORM simply can't send data without a connection. So the real compliance question is what happens on resume — make sure your suspend/resume settings and the LMS's relaunch behavior actually put the learner back where they stopped, and test it. A course can pass every design review and still fail the audit if the LMS restarts learners at the menu.
Rise is the harder half. There's no native offline detection in the published output that I'm aware of. You could inject JavaScript into the published package listening for offline/online events, but that's modifying published output — unsupported, and a Rise update can break it. For mandatory training, I'd push this requirement to the LMS level rather than the authoring tool.
