How (Not) to Parallel Park
I fancy myself a pretty good parallel parker, but couldn't even begin to explain to someone how to do it. So this was a fun challenge to do. Because parallel parking is both challenging to do and explain, I set the activity up in stages. In the first screen, learners start by just watching: the maneuver gets slowed down into five narrated moments. The 2nd screen is a branching scenario, where wrong answers actually play out. In the 3rd part, the learner is maneuvering the car themselves, with live coaching and a scored park. I added a little confetti victory lap at the end.
I did this in Articulate Storyline, using custom HTML for each screen, inserted in as web objects, animated, voiced, and captioned. I have variables set up to track scores and unlock navigation, but I wasn't actually able to get the required score to advance, so I took those out to spare anyone else going through it.
If I did a version 2, I'd make the coaching adaptive, since the simulator already knows how you failed and could give feedback on that specific mistake. I'd also add tighter parking spots and add more obstacles, like a jaywalker, for more of a challenge as the learner's score increases.
Hope you enjoy!

THIS taught me to parallel park! This should absolutely be used by driving schools. Your instructional design plan is just as brilliant as the execution of the development. I truly learned the nuances at my own pace during the 5 moments. Then, being able to see the car go back and forth using (what I imagine is) a motion line with a slider trigger - beautiful! The hands on practice is as close to realistic as one could get without a steering wheel (and I didn't do great in that piece). Bravo! Bravo!
I completely agree with AngieCarter_PCB! This was awesome ded2. We are going to share this example in our Weekly Newsletter.
