We saw this alongside your  Product Ideas post. You're not missing anything about how the feature works today, what you ran into is accurate: Direction only offers row or column for the whole container, at every breakpoint. So a graduated "3 across / 2 across / 1 across" grid isn't something a single container can do on its own, and to get that effect you would need to create nested container configurations.

We can't promise specific changes to this, but Custom Block responsiveness is a Labs feature and we're still making improvements based off feedback like yours. We wanted to let you know we've read your posts and appreciate the thought you put behind testing this feature.
