Learn chess by playing

Bonjour Heroes.

First of all, I don't play chess at all.

Second, I learn by doing… often before I’ve even learned everything I need to know. That’s good for creativity, but not at all good for succeeding in long-term studies.😁

So, rather than learning all the possible moves of the different pieces in theory, let’s grab a chessboard and play. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the right answer ahead of time—you’ll learn.

Technically: Of course, I couldn’t settle for just one direction with a single slider, as suggested this week for an easy start. But it’s pretty simple: all the sliders on the screen share the SAME variable. The length of their paths varies. Depending on their orientation, you have to “reorient” the image in the slider button. Note: This is a major drawback of the native slider. The images you can use for the slider button are of very poor quality.

I started with the Queen, which can move in all directions (I just discovered that). So, all you have to do is remove a few directions for the other pieces. That’s the basic idea. It’s fully controllable via the keyboard, of course.    Learn by playing

I only had a few hours before heading back to work. I only made four screens (the Queen, and the Bishop in three questions). Chess players will point out that I’ve carefully avoided the piece that poses a problem in this case: the Knight. Absolutely… but I’m thinking about it.   (DONE this Tuesday)

  • Hi Thierry, I like the concept of this with showing how the pieces move, good job! I'm a little confused by your statement 'This is a major drawback of the native slider. The images you can use for the slider button are of very poor quality' - you can make anything the slider button, it's a fill. Check out some of the sliders in these previous challenges. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're comment is referencing, I change out the sliders frequently with images either that we've created, or generated, or selected.

  • Hello TreyMcNabb-f8db . Thank you for joining the discussion... even though there isn't really a discussion. You’re right. I’d been left with that impression from several previous instances where images were used instead of the basic slider button. It seemed to me that the images were heavily degraded and blurry. That’s why I was trying to keep those images in the buttons as small as possible. But I just ran a “large-format” test, and the image quality is very satisfactory (just a slight distortion). In short, it was a preconception, and I appreciate you encouraging me to correct it.
