Whispers of the Red Giants

Check Out the Demo Here

My demo this week was inspired by a trip we took to Sequoia National Park in California a couple months ago. Sequoia was founded in 1890, and was the United States 2nd designated National Park, after Yellowstone.

I was hoping to capture the feel of being in this amazing forest, but it's impossible to do justice to this beautiful place and provide perspective on how big these trees are.

The tabs are on the third slide and feature some key places to visit, with embedded Google Street View maps to help explore the locations. The embedded maps are web objects, and I credit community member Alicia de Billy for her tutorial on how to do this. She created a walking tour of Quebec City a couple years ago and I referred to her tutorial to remember how to do it.

Enjoy the tour!

Such a fun way to start the week!
Sequoia National Park is definitely on my bucket list, so getting to see it like this was a treat on this Monday. 🌲

Embedding the Google Map views as web objects is a genius move. I really liked how smoothly they were worked into the tabbed interaction—it’s clean, simple, and super engaging.

Thanks for sharing Alicia’s idea! It’s already got me brainstorming ways to use something similar in future projects. 🥳

Definitely go! It was on my bucket list too. The park is really spread out and is adjacent to Kings Canyon Park. There is some driving required to get from the park entrance (in Three Rivers at the foot of the mountains) to the forest. I liked that there were hiking trails for all kinds of capabilities. The Crystal Cave just reopened after four years--it closed after a bad 2021 forest fire. You can see the burn scars on some of the giant trees.

I'm glad you liked that map interaction--Alicia used it in a challenge a couple years ago and I always refer to it. I'd love to see what you do with it.

  • Beautiful personal photos JodiSansone . And the music gave me goose bumps.

I love hiking in the woods, forests, among the trees, more than any other trail, including along a “wild coast” by the sea, as I did a week ago. But I think I would feel a little scared at the foot of these giants. I hope that climate change and the major fires that have occurred and are still ongoing in the US will never damage this magnificent forest again.

Made me miss home- in a good way. 😎

It's very well done and quite moving, especially with the soundtrack. Thank you for sharing your talent via this wonderful tutorial on the Red Giants.
