Whether you're new to the E-Learning Heroes community and you want to learn the basics or you're looking for a software simulation example, this course is for you.
Want to try building something similar in Storyline 360 but don’t have Articulate 360? Start a free 30-day trial.
Hi Dana! Thanks for the question! I'm so glad you're willing to share some of your creations with the community! One way to share what you've created is to upload it to the new portfolio area of your E-Learning Heroes profile. If you've created something you want to share in the downloads, create a discussion in Building Better Courses and share it there, and from there we can probably add it to our Downloads section, depending on what it is! :) Hope this helps!
Hi Kumar - here's a link to few tutorials that will help you customize the Storyline player:
- Working With The Player: https://community.articulate.com/series/articulate-storyline-2/articles/customizing-the-player
- How to create an invisible player: https://community.articulate.com/series/41/articles/make-articulate-storyline-player-invisible
Hope this helps!
This is great! I understand that the screen recording was done using Articulate's screen recording functionality. I do have a question there...what was your screen resolution set to in order to capture the web? I have a widescreen monitor and struggle with getting a finished product that captures what I need and is legible.
Hi Kristopher! The slide I was working with in storyline is 720 x 540 however I find when I record at that size, if I ever show the course in the full browser view, it quickly becomes blurred and pixelated. So with that in mind, I doubled the screen area from the slide, and recorded at 1140 x 1080. This way it still has the same aspect ratio but I can show the course in a larger screen or full browser and still retain the cripsness of the recording. Hope this helps! Let me know if there's additional questions.
Hi Mimi! The main slide is a menu I've created simply using shapes with states. Each lesson has been recorded using the Storyline Screen Recorder, and then after I inserted the demo in Try Me mode and edited the captions and the interactions that occur on each slide. Here's more info about how to use the Storyline Screen Recorder:

Let me know if this answers your questions, or if you have any additional comments or feedback. Thanks!
Hi!
Which font are you using for the continue button and for the other text in the "Edit Your Profile" square? =)
Very simple and beautiful design by the way! =)
Hi Nicole!
Thank you a great example! May I ask a question: I have to create a software simulation but unfortunately screen recording function doesn't work in my Storyline system (something like "Unexpected or Erratic Behavior in Articulate Storyline 2"). I've created the case of the error but while I'm waiting for fixing this bug I'd like to know is it possible to use screenshots and animate/trigger them in order to behave in a similar way? Or maybe I can use other screen recording software and then incorporate it to Storyline? What do you think? Is there any options for this?
Thank you so much in advance and hope to hear.
Kind regards,
Olga
Hi Olga - Sorry to hear you've run into this issue with the screen recorder! You might want to check out this link, in case you haven't seen it: https://articulate.com/support/article/unexpected-or-erratic-behavior-in-articulate-storyline-2
I dont think working with another screen recording software will work well for you if you want to do step-by-step slides with captions that show how to use a website or application. You certainly COULD use static screenshots and add hotspots, and interactivity, over top of it, but it would take a lot more time than simply using the Screen Recorder. Hopefully you can follow the steps at the above link to troubleshoot your SL2 and get the Recorder working for you!!
Hi Lisa - I don't have this one available for download, however I can tell you that each lesson in the menu is a separate scene which includes the screen recording for that task. The menu is just rectangle shapes with the name of the lesson and a Hover and Visited state. Each rectangle links to the associated scene. That is how it was done :)
This is great. I've been asked to build a simulation for a complex software program with a lot of variable inputs. I've been thinking that if i require the user to click all of the right boxes and type the right things, it will take forever and lose the benefits. I like how in some instances the fields were already populated and they just clicked the submit button. Did you do this by deleting some slides from the recording?
Hi Nicole, a really cool design. How did you manage to set the screencast as the entire screen? I've just recorded a system but currently, the try me mode is placed firmly in the middle of the page. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Anne,
I'm sorry but I'm not sure what you mean. You can drag the recording box anywhere on your screen. Can you explain in a little more detail the problem you're running into?
I know I am all late. I just found this and it has inspired me so much!!!! I am attempting to recreate this magic with one screen from a system my job uses. Good grief the steps that are going into this! I hope it will be half as awesome as this one.
Hi everyone! I'm little late, but I'm going to build something similar for my organization. I have some trouble to find out how to return to the starting scene (the "menù" one with the buttons) at the end of every scene with the topic linked to every button. Hope I've been clear, this software training is such inspring!
It would be incredible to have another challenge, or permanent links to projects that work like this, or have software simulations. There was a thread, but many of the project links are invalid. https://community.articulate.com/articles/screencasts-software-simulations
Hi Sarah,
Yes, that challenge is from many years ago, which explains why some of the links don't work anymore. Unfortunately, since members submit those projects, we don't have any control over the links. However, there are two other software training examples created by our team. Here are those links:
- Review 360: https://community.articulate.com/e-learning-examples/storyline-360-review-360-software-sim
- Trello: https://community.articulate.com/e-learning-examples/rise-360-software-training-example
I will also reach out to David and see if he's planning on doing another software challenge.
Hi Sarah. The links Allison shared feature some good examples. I do have a software training challenge planned in October. I might be able to bump it up in the rotation.
This is one of my favourite examples of a simulation. I was wondering however, what is the slide size/screen size when this was recorded?
Also, when I create something like this I want to still navigation buttons that can take me to the previous slide. I'm really struggling with the storyline 360 navigation for slides that have simulation on them. Any help on that would be extremely helpful.
Thanks
