Do’s and don’ts knowledge checks are fast, low-stakes tools for helping learners assess their understanding. While you’ll often see them shared as true/false and multiple choice questions, those aren’t your only options. In this example, learners use a slider to choose whether behaviors are smart habits or best avoided. Since this is a different interaction than people might expect for the content, it adds a dash of novelty. Plus, sliding builds in a brief pause for learners to question whether their initial choice is the right one. In Storyline 360, you can add prebuilt sliders to a slide with just a click. Then all you have to do is customize the design around your interaction and use the Trigger Wizard to quickly set up feedback. So with just a few steps, you can craft a custom interaction that grabs learners’ attention. Games can be an amusing way to pass the time, but they can also encourage people to engage thoughtfully with complex and difficult topics. The Re-Entry Journey, winner of DemoFest’s Best Game-based Project award at DevLearn 2023, shows how much of an impact learning experiences like this can have on players. In this Storyline 360 game, learners take on the role of someone reentering society on probation. They start the game with what at the surface might appear to be a simple goal—make it to the end of their probation period without incurring additional playtime or added penalties. But that seemingly basic task is incredibly challenging in real life, with the deck stacked against people right from the beginning. To simulate that experience, this game is intentionally difficult and weaves in many of the complex real-world choices that people face in this situation. While the gameplay in The Re-Entry Journey may be challenging, the process used to create it was not! This game was developed almost entirely using Storyline 360’s built-in features, with JavaScript only stepping in to help with the timer. Built on a single slide with multiple layers, most of the magic happens thanks to one of Storyline 360’s core features—triggers. It just goes to show how far you can push Storyline 360 to create unexpected learning experiences. Explore this project. Brand standards are sometimes seen as a frustrating limitation. But as this portfolio by Mat King shows, a more limited set of colors, fonts, and design choices doesn’t have to lead to dull-looking e-learning. In fact, those guidelines have the potential to help your project look pulled together while still leaving lots of room for creative choices. Shared at DevLearn’s 2023 DemoFest, this Rise 360 project showcases the new technologies and design capabilities Mat and his team have used in their projects. The collection of images, interactions, and videos make it easy to see how branding guidelines apply to different mediums. They also demonstrate eye-catching ways to push the envelope within those rules. And by collecting these examples in a similarly branded Rise 360 course, course creators have a one-stop shop for ideas and inspiration! Explore this project. At first glance, crafting your own digital game might seem like an overwhelming task requiring specialized tools and coding. But if you have Storyline 360, building this kind of interactive experience might be easier than you think. Winner of DemoFest’s Best in Show: Vendor award at Learning Solutions 2023, this example shares a surprisingly simple approach to making this happen. By combining features like dials, question banks, triggers, and variables, the development process becomes substantially faster than creating every game mechanic from scratch. And the result is an experience that replicates the feel of playing a board game—without the need for JavaScript or other coding to make it come to life. Explore this project. To get started, just choose the number of players. For each person’s turn, roll the dice and manually move the player token the correct number of spaces. The color of the spot you land on determines the question type you’ll answer. Click the question card, choose your answer, and find out whether you added to your score or missed out on points. Then the question card will automatically close and start the next player’s turn. Watch this behind-the-scenes project tour to find out more about how it was made.
