- DebraBrownCommunity MemberDavid, incredible and mind grabbing. Kept me hooked. And, since my Dad used to be a beat cop in Washington, DC, it added a sense of nostalgia to the story for me.
I know what you mean about Scotland and it's islands. There is something about the place that feels like home. - Thanks, Debra! :) Wow, I could see how knowing a DC beat cop would personalize the story even more. And, yes, I think Scotland is calling me home—though I have yet to actually visit, lol. ;)
- PatONeill-0009dCommunity MemberHi David. I am completely new into this eLearning world, so all I can say is how much this has inspired me. It's an absolutely wonderful illustration of what is possible to achieve with these tools, thank you! What steps did you follow to go from an idea into a product that completely captures the user?
- Welcome to the elearning world, Pat! :) And thank you for the kind words! This project was one of those happy coincidences born out of current circumstances. I had this awesome new tool (Rise) to work with, and I had recently watched (and re-watched) the BBC Shetland mystery series.
I thought Rise would work well as a vehicle for storytelling, so I decided to use a story to teach geography. And with my final destination already in mind (thanks to my fascination with Scotland), I used geographical clues to lead the reader to the Shetland Islands, mixing in a bit of drama to propel the story.
I like to take inspiration from things around me, be that subject matter or design elements. If something is fascinating to you, it makes your job of crafting a course easier and more enjoyable, and since enthusiasm is contagious, you'll be more likely to capture your audience.
I look forward to seeing your elearning creations! One place you can always find inspiration and get supportive feedback is our weekly elearning challenge. You can check out past and present challenges here: https://community.articulate.com/hubs/e-learning-challenges

- ScottLindstrom-Community MemberThat was simply a brilliant use of storytelling David! You should go to Scotland, it's an amazing country. It's why my Scottish mum named me Scott. :-)
- Thanks, Scott! :) I hope to go someday. And I love the anecdote!
- ClaireGibson-b6Community MemberBrilliant. You made learning geography interesting and mysterious. I enjoyed how the use of story-telling made learning fun and desirable. Thank you for a fabulous example, which I learned much from both geographically and design wise. Adult education at it's finest.
- Thanks, Claire! I'm blushing. 😊
