How to Use Articulate Storyline on a Mac (with Videos!)
Here’s a question we get a lot: “Is there a Mac version of Articulate Storyline?” Lots of folks like to use Apple-built hardware such as iMacs, Macbook Airs, and Macbook Pros to create, design, and imagine. We get it! We love Macs too.
While there is no Mac-native version of Storyline, it's super-easy to use Storyline on your favorite Mac hardware using a virtual environment. All you need to do is get virtual environment software that creates a Windows interface on your Mac. There are a ton of options for creating virtual environments, including Parallels, Apple Boot Camp, and VMware.
With a virtual environment, you’ll be able to switch back and forth between your usual Mac display and viewing a Windows interface with Windows programs.
We've created a few short videos to walk you through the process. In this series, we'll show you how to use Parallels to run Storyline on your Mac in no time.
Step 1: Install Parallels
Step 2: Install Windows
Step 3: Install Storyline
Step 4 (optional): Getting Resolution Right for Retina Displays

- esthercarneyCommunity MemberI'm really loving captivate. And no windows installation and hence no viruses. I think I don't need storyline at all afterall.
- ClaytonIlolahiaCommunity MemberI am doing my Articulate certification tomorrow (3 day training) and I naively thought I could simply install a "free trial" version on my MacBook Pro tonight to get me through the next three days of training. Realising I need two more software programs including a (not free) copy of Windows just to get Storyline up a running, I've decided to get up as the sun rises to head back to my office to pick up a Windows-based laptop before I go to training. I also had issues creating an Articulate ID when the website told me I needed a valid user ID despite receiving and activating the validation link in my inbox.... not a great first impression for "the world's best e-learining solution." I hope my mind can be changed during my training course.... Adobe Captivate is looking much more attractive at this point.
- ClaytonIlolahiaCommunity MemberI'm on my third and final day of my Articulate Storyline certification course. It's a great piece of software, which I would highly recommend for PC users. Fingers crossed a Mac version is not too far away!
- MarkSiegristCommunity MemberI wouldn't hold your breath waiting for a Mac version. Unless Articulate does a complete rewrite of their application suite, there's no chance, as they heavily rely on the Office/PowerPoint APIs/functionality, and they are completely different between PC and Mac versions.
- DougKipta-fa001Community MemberAs a Mac user, is there any word on this now? I'm seeing that if i use it via Parallells (that costs money), also to install windows (that costs money), and also then I buy the SL product. Pain in the a__ to be honest. I honestly don't want to be purchasing three subscriptions when i'm trying to use one product. Let me know, and pretty please get this done this year. As a rapid development tool it is a good product.
- JacquelineColemCommunity MemberSo in order to complete this tutorial I will actually have to buy Windows but I can use a trial version of Parallels? It would be great if Storyline just made a version for Mac, this is exhausting.
- Hi Jackqueline - That's correct. You will need to purchase Parallels and a licensed version of Windows to run Storyline (and other Windows-only applications) on your Mac.
For what it's worth, Storyline runs amazing on Macs running Parallels. I do all my demos, courses, tutorials, and screencast videos on my 3-yr MacBook Pro.
But we also get that a native Mac version is important and it's something we are looking at closely.- AndersFrostCommunity MemberSo which version of Parallels are you using? Just the normal parallels for desktop (which you pay one time for) or pro og businessversions, which you pay an annual fee for?
I need to start working in articulate, but I really don't want to go back to working on a windows machine.
- BethCouglerBlomCommunity MemberI'm getting frustrated using Articulate 360 / Storyline 360 on my Mac using Parallels and wondering if I have to buy a PC to help it run faster. It's not so bad once I get into Storyline but logging into Parallels and then clicking into the 360 icon on the VE desktop and then clicking into the Storyline "open" link in the menu to get into Storyline is just painfully slow. I'm running Windows 10 on the Parallels environment. Anyone got a faster solution?
- IvanGroeCommunity MemberUnfortunately, I you're going to have to buy a pc!
I hope Articulate comes out with Max version soon!

- BobWikerCommunity MemberThere's always Boot Camp, which comes free with every Mac. Apple states: "Boot Camp helps you install Microsoft Windows on your Mac. After you install, restart your Mac to switch between macOS and Windows."
Many folks have said that the fastest, best Windows PC is actually a Mac running Boot Camp. It's native, not an emulator or virtual environment. Runs directly off the Intel chip in your Mac. I've used it and it's pretty darn good. Here is the Boot Camp support page, with details and Quick Start documentation:

Beth- GingerNichols2Community MemberI use bootcamp to run SL2 and Articulate 360 on my Mac. I think it works well. There's always rumors that a Mac version is coming soon. I heard Summer of 2017 at the Articulate booth at TechKnowledge so hopefully it's in the works as summer has come and gone.
- JamieBilling457Community MemberThought I'd throw my workaround for Mac/Storyline into the mix.
My son-in-law brought me an old PC - HP with CORE i3 - that works great. He found it in a recycling bin. Seriously, you don't need much of a PC to run Storyline.
I then invested 180.00 (CA) for Windows 10 and 120.00 for MS Office 360. Finally I bought a Wormhole by J5Create for 30 bux - a double sided USB connector - that connects my Mac to my PC so I can access both machines and all their files via shared keyboard/mouse and monitors.
With this set-up I can create in Storyline and easily bring in course assets created on my Mac without sullying it with MS or dealing with Bootcamp or other virtual machine options. Plus I now have a backup machine just in case my Mac goes down (knocking on wood that that never happens!) I'm not worried about the PC as I know I can replace it for free or at least very cheaply. The Mac, whole 'nother story.
Having said that - I can't wait for Storyline for Mac, which I'm confident will come eventually. - SavannahBethkeCommunity MemberYa'll for real? Get with it. Create a version for Mac.
- DougHodgsonCommunity MemberJust testing Storyline 3 on Parallels 11 Windows 7 - Sierra and we can't recognize our Raids which are formatted for Mac which hold our content. It just wants to format them which is obviously bad. Should this combo work or do we need to upgrade Parallels or Windows? Any successful combinations using similar combos as we need to Upgrade to STL 3.
- KristenWylde049Community MemberI know this is an old thread but hoping that it's still utilised.
I just want some clarity here re pricing. So if I have a Mac and want to use Articulate I'm supposed to purchase Parallel, then purchase Windows software and then additionally Microsoft Office? That's ridiculous!- Hi Kristen - That's correct. You will need a copy of Windows and Parallels (or VMware) to run Storyline on your Mac. You are not required to install Office (PowerPoint) unless you plan on importing PowerPoint files into Storyline. These requirements are the same if you were running directly on a Windows machine.
I have used Articulate software exclusively on my MacBook Pro for the past 4 years and don't have any issues. I essentially run 2 computers on a single computer.
