In this user guide, we'll show you how to sync motion path animations with triggers. (To learn how to sync entrance and exit animations, see this user guide.) Understanding Motion Paths and Triggers Triggering Motion Paths Based on Learners' Actions Syncing Motion Paths with the Slide's Timeline Understanding Motion Paths and Triggers When you add a motion path animation to an object, a trigger will automatically be created to control the timing of the motion path. By default, motion paths are triggered when the timeline of the object starts, but you can change the timing as described below. Triggering Motion Paths Based on Learners' Actions You can trigger a motion path when learners perform a certain action. Just double-click the Move trigger in the Triggers panel to open it for editing, then adjust the parameters of the trigger. For example, let's say you want the motion path to occur when learners click an object. You'd change the When parameter to User clicks. Other examples include triggering the motion path when the state of an object is visited or when the value of a variable changes. If you need help editing triggers, see this user guide. Syncing Motion Paths with the Slide's Timeline To synchronize a motion path animation with the slide's timeline, do this: Double-click the Move trigger in the Triggers panel to open it for editing. Change the When parameter to Timeline reaches, then choose an option from the corresponding drop-down: Time: Choose this option to trigger your motion path at a specific time, then enter the exact time in seconds. Cue point: Choose this option to trigger your motion path when the timeline reaches a specific cue point, then select an existing cue point. (See this article to learn more about cue points.) Click OK to save your changes. If you sync a motion path with a cue point and later move the cue point to a different time, the motion path will also move to the new time. In other words, it'll remain synchronized with the cue point you selected no matter when the cue point occurs. Storyline 3 has a library of transitions to give your slides and layers a professional touch. When used strategically, transitions can even convey a sense of movement, pace, and direction. Adding Transitions In Slide View, select the base layer or a supplemental layer in the Slide Layers panel. Go to the Transitions tab on the Storyline ribbon and choose a transition from the gallery. Note: Push and Uncover transitions aren't available for layers. You can choose the direction of most transitions. Select your choice from the Effect Options drop-down. Adjust the speed of your transition by entering a time (in seconds) in the Duration field. To use the same transition elsewhere, click Apply to All. If you're on the base layer of a slide, it'll apply the same transition to the base layer of all other slides in your course, including slide masters. It's easy to synchronize animations in Storyline 3. In this user guide, we'll look at three ways to sync entrance and exit animations. Manually Adjusting the Timing and Duration of Objects Using the Playhead to Sync Animations Using Cue Points to Sync Animations Manually Adjusting the Timing and Duration of Objects One way to sync entrance animations is to change the timing of objects manually. Just drag objects left or right along the timeline to adjust when they appear (or animate in). To sync exit animations, just change the duration of objects. Drag the right edge of an object along the timeline to adjust when it disappears (or animates out). When you right-click an object on the timeline, you'll see additional options for managing timing and duration: Show Until End This displays the object until the end of the slide. Show Always This displays the object for the entire duration of the slide. Timing This lets you specify the exact start time and duration of the object (in seconds). Using the Playhead to Sync Animations Perhaps the quickest and easiest way to synchronize animations is to align objects to the playhead. Here's how: Go to the slide where you want to sync animations and open the timeline. Click the play/pause button in the lower left corner of the timeline to play the slide audio. When your audio reaches the point where you want an object to animate into the slide, click the play/pause button again to pause the playhead. (You can also press the spacebar on your keyboard to play/pause.) Right-click the object on the timeline that you want to animate and select Align to Playhead. Repeat steps 2–4 until you've synchronized the entire slide. Using Cue Points to Sync Animations Another way to sync animations is to use cue points. Cue points let you precisely align objects on the timeline. First, you'll need to place cue points on the timeline where you want animations to occur (see details below). Then, right-click each object on the timeline, scroll to Align to Cue Point, and choose a cue point. Here's how to add, delete, and move cue points on the timeline: Add Right-click anywhere in the timeline and select Create Cue Point at Playhead. Tip: To add cue points on the fly, click the play button in the lower left corner of the timeline, then press C on your keyboard at any point where you want to insert a cue point. Delete Right-click the cue point marker you want to delete and select Delete Cue Point. Delete All Right-click anywhere in the timeline and select Delete All Cue Points. Here’s how to add an animation to an object: Select the object and go to the Animations tab on the Storyline ribbon. Click the star icon for the type of animation you want to add (entrance, exit, or motion path). Choose an animation from the gallery. Tips: You can add animations to objects on yourslides,layers,slide masters,feedback masters, andstates. Some animations don't work when viewing HTML5 output in Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge. Adjusting the Speed of an Animation Entrance and exit animations default to a duration of 0.75 seconds. Motion paths default to 2 seconds. But you can make them faster or slower. Just enter a time in the Duration field for the animation. The duration can be as fast as 0.1 second or as slow as 59 seconds. Renaming Motion Path Animations Storyline assigns names to motion path animations, but you can rename them. And it’s a good idea to rename them so you can identify them when you’re working with triggers. Go to the Animations tab on the ribbon. This reveals the motion path animations you’ve already added to the slide. Select the motion path you want to rename, then enter a new name for it in the Name field on the ribbon. Choosing Effect and Path Options You can tweak the behavior of most animations by choosing Effect Options (for entrance and exit animations) or Path Options (for motion path animations). Effect Options Path Options You can choose the direction of some animations. You can choose a shape, number of spins, or number of spokes for other animations. You can combine some animations with Fly In or Fly Out animations. Just select a direction from the Enter sub-menu. If an object has text, you can also animate the text all at once or by paragraphs. Here's an example. You can choose the direction of some animations. Motion paths are unlocked by default, meaning they move with the object to which they're applied. If you lock a motion path, it'll move independently of the object to which it's applied. Motion paths start and end smoothly by default, meaning the starting and ending speed is a bit slower than the rest of the animation. This is called easing. Use the Direction sub-menu to turn easing on or off for the starting and ending points, then use the Speed sub-menu to adjust the subtlety of the effect. If you build a motion path and later decide you want it to travel in the opposite direction, select Reverse Path Direction. Motion paths support relative starting points, meaning you can add more than one motion path to the same object and have each begin at the new location of the object, based on previous movements. Just choose Relative Start Point. New in Storyline 3, you can now change an object’s orientation as it travels along a non-linear motion path so it’s always facing the direction it’s moving. Just click Orient Shape to Path. Copying Animations from One Object to Another Need to use the same animations on several objects? Save time by copying animations from one object to another with the Animation Painter. Select the object that has animations you want to copy. Go to the Animations tab on the ribbon and click Animation Painter. Click another object to apply the animations to it. Tip: If you need to apply the same animations to multiple objects, click the Animation Painter twice to keep it turned on. When you're finished, click it again to turn it off or press the Esc key on your keyboard. Animating Grouped Objects and Answer Choices To individually animate the items in a grouped object or block of answer choices: Open the timeline. Click the triangle beside the grouped object or block of answer choices to expand it. Apply animations to each item separately. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to use the new consolidated narration window in Presenter 360 to record narration and synchronize it with animations. Watch this video demonstration, then follow the activities below to practice. Practice Activities: Add Objects to a PowerPoint Slide Add Animations Record Narration and Sync Animations at the Same Time Sync Animations Separately Fine Tune Animation Timings Edit Audio Preview Practice Activity: Add Objects to a PowerPoint Slide Create a new PowerPoint file and save it on your local computer. Use your practice files to import three icons of your choice to a blank slide in your presentation. (Open the Images folder in your practice files, then open the Icons folder to see your options.) Arrange the icons where you want them on the slide. Practice Activity: Add Animations Select all three icons you added to the slide in the previous activity, then go to the Animations tab on the PowerPoint ribbon and select the Fade entrance animation. It's best to setanimations to occur “on click,” so you can synchronize them with audio in Presenter 360. Select all three icons on the slide again, then go to the Animations tab and select On Click from the Start drop-down list. And let’s make sure the animations occur in the right order. Go to the Animations tab and click Animation Pane. Drag the objects up and down the animation pane until they’re in the order you want. Practice Activity: Record Narration and Sync Animations at the Same Time Now let's record narration and sync it with our PowerPoint animations. (If you prefer to import audio rather than recording it, you can do that, too. We cover importing and exporting audio in the next tutorial.) Make sure you have a microphone for recording narration. You can use a built-in microphone or one that you plug into your computer. If you like to use a script when recording narration, enter that text into the notes panel for the slide you just created. Then go to the Articulate tab on the PowerPoint ribbon and click Narration. Click the Record button on the ribbon. Recording will start immediately and the "Record" button will change to "Next Animation" with a number above it. The number lets you know how many on-click animations there are on the slide. It'll count down each time you click the button. Record yourself reading the script and click the Next Animation button each time you want to trigger an animation. Click Stop Recording when you're done. Your audio waveform will appear in the timeline. Use the play/pause button on the ribbon to preview your slide. Practice Activity: Sync Animations Separately Sometimes, you need to sync animations without recording narration at the same time. No problem. Presenter 360 has you covered. Click the Sync Animations button on the ribbon. Your narration will begin playing. As you listen to the audio, click the Next Animation button when you want to trigger an animation. (The "Next Animation" button will change to "Done Syncing" when you've triggered all the animations for the slide.) Click Done Syncing when you're finished. Practice Activity: Fine Tune Animation Timings Presenter 360’s new timeline lets you tweak individualanimation timings without re-syncing the whole slide. Just drag the animation markers left or right along the timeline to change their timings. Click Save & Close on the ribbon to exit the Narration window. Practice Activity: Edit Audio Sometimes, you make a mistake while recording and you need to cut out the unwanted portion of audio. Good news! Presenter 360 has a built-in audio editor. Go to the Articulate tab on the PowerPoint ribbon and click Audio Editor. Select the slide you want to edit from the slide sorter on the left. Use your mouse to select a portion of the audio waveform, then click Delete on the ribbon to remove it. Click Save & Close to exit the audio editor. And we added a new timeline so it’s easier than ever before to manage your audio, animations, and annotations. Accessing the Consolidated Narration Window Switching Between Slides Opening, Closing, and Resizing Panels Undocking and Redocking the Notes Panel Editing Notes Changing the Color of the Notes Panel Background and Text Changing the Zoom Level of the Timeline Panel Adjusting the Duration of a Slide Previewing a Slide Adding, Editing, and Exporting Audio Syncing Animations Adding and Editing Annotations Closing the Consolidated Narration Window Accessing theConsolidated Narration Window Go to the Articulate tab on the PowerPoint ribbon and click Narration. The consolidated narrationwindow has these main features: Ribbon The ribbon runs across the top of the window and includes buttons for working with audio, animations, and annotations. You can hide the ribbon by double-clicking the Record tab. Double-click it again to restore the ribbon. Slide Stage The slide stage is located in the middle of the window. It’ll automatically adjust to fit the available space, depending on the size of the surrounding panels. It displays a thumbnail image for each slide in your course and lets you switch between slides. Timeline Panel The timeline panel runs across the bottom of the screen. The timeline’s powerful yet intuitive features let you: Edit and export audio Sync animations Adjust the timing and duration of annotations Notes Panel The notes panel is located on the right side of the screen. It’s synchronized with the notes panel in PowerPoint, so you can use your notes as a script while you record narration and sync animations. You can undock the notes paneland move it to another monitor when you need more room to work, then redock it when you’re done. You can also change the color of the notes panel background and textto make it easier to see how your notes will look if you include them in your published course. Switching Between Slides The consolidated narrationwindow will open to the slide you’re currently viewing in PowerPoint, but you can switch to a different slide by selecting a thumbnail in the slides panel on the left. Opening, Closing, and Resizing Panels You can resize the slides, timeline, and notes panels when you need to focus on certain features. You can also close panels altogether to move them out of the way, then reopen them when you need them. Resize To resize a panel, just drag its boundary. For example, to make the timeline panel taller, drag its top boundary upward. Drag its boundary downward to make it shorter. Close To close a panel, drag its boundary to the edge of the screen. For example, drag the left boundary of the notes panel all the way to the right side of the screen to close it. Open To open a panel that was previously closed, just click its title bar on the edge of the screen. Undocking and Redocking the Notes Panel Need more room when you’re using the notes panel as a script for recording narration? Just undock the notes panel and move it to another monitor. To undock the notes panel, click its title bar and drag it to a new location, or double-click the title to pop the panel out. To redock the notes panel in its original location, click the Redock button in the panel’s upper right corner. Another way to redock the notes panel is to click Redock All Windows on the ribbon. Editing Notes The notes panel in the consolidated narrationwindow is synchronized with the notes panel in PowerPoint. As a result, you can add or edit notes in either location, and they’ll be updated immediately in the other location. The notes panel in the consolidated narration windowwindow can be helpful when you need to read from a script while recording narration. Changing the Color of the Notes Panel Background and Text The notes panel might not be white with black text like the rest of the screen. We wanted to make it easier to see how your notes panel will look if you include it in your published course. The notes panel colors are controlled by your player properties. See this article to learn how to change the notes background color. Changing the Zoom Level of the Timeline Panel Zoom into the timeline panel for precise editing, or zoom out to get a big-picture view of the current slide’s entire timeline. Drag the zoom slider left and right to change your zoom level. Adjusting the Duration of a Slide To change the duration of a slide, just drag the End marker left or right in the timeline panel. If the slide you’re editing has audio or video content, you can’t decrease the slide’s overall duration, but you can increase it by dragging the End marker to the right. Previewing a Slide To preview a slide, use the play/pause button on the ribbon or the play/pause button in the lower left corner of the timeline panel. Adding, Editing, and Exporting Audio In Presenter 360, you can add, edit, and export audio for each slide in your course—all in the same consolidated narration window.
