I just captioned my first course in Storyline 3 using the Closed Caption Editor and when I published the course, all apostrophes are showing ascii code: ('). Is this a bug? How can I get an apostrophe to show instead of the code?
Just an FYI - A good rule of thumb to follow working with text is to always copy and paste from notepad. Notepad strips out any text formatting/code and eliminates text formatting issues. In some of our old courses quotes and apostrophes were set in the CC text but simply didn't show up on screen because someone used the curly quotes by mistake.
Thanks, but in this case, I was typing directly in the editor.
My publish settings were for Flash first; when I changed that it HTML5 first, the problem disappeared :)

Hi Diane, thanks for letting us know what's going on! We were seeing a problem with some closed caption punctuation appearing incorrectly in Flash, and we released a fix for that bug in Storyline 360 Update 9.
Are you on the latest update of Storyline 360? To check, click the Help tab, then click About Storyline. You should see 3.10.13923.0 in the bottom-right corner.
Let me know if you're already on the latest update, and we'll keep digging!
Ah, you did mention Storyline 3 in your original post--sorry about that! Our team is still working through a fix for this bug in Storyline 3, and we'll keep you posted on when that fix is released. 🙂
Talking about cc. My computer was replaced Friday and I no longer have the cc option to add or edit the cc. The previous courses I've completed don't show the cc on the slides and I have the cc turned on in the player. I'm I missing something simple?
What version of Storyline is installed on your computer--Storyline 360 or Storyline 3?
Also, can you tell me the exact version number you're using? To check, click the Help tab, then click About Storyline. You should see the version number in the bottom-right corner. Thanks!
I have Storyline 3 and the version # 2:3.2.13213.0
I’m not having the issue today. I tried booting my computer and checked some previous courses yesterday morning and none would show the cc. I don’t know what was causing it.
Has anyone come up with another workaround for the punctuation issue? Or courses seem to work better when publishing Flash/HTML backup. We are using SL3.
Until they release a fix, I have been avoiding apostrophes in closed captions. It's not usually grammatically correct (youre, theyre, don't, Ma am, etc.) but it avoids the distraction of seeing ACSII in the middle of a word.

The ampersand isn't showing correctly, either!
Figured it out myself...changed publishing from Flash first to HTML5 first and the problem resolved.
:-)
Its nice when you figure out your own issues. ; )

Hi Alyssa,
I'm not on SL 360...I'm using SL3. I'll watch for an update patch for that.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly,
Diane -- no ETA on a fix just yet, but we'll let you know as soon as we get more information on that! Thanks for checking in. 🙂
Dan -- Hmm, that's really strange. Would you mind sharing your file with me so I can take a closer look? You can attach it to a new thread comment or send it to me privately here.
Here ya go.
Hi again Dan,
Great to hear that the captions are working well for you today. I tested it, and the captions appeared for me, as well.
Perhaps when you originally tested the file, you weren't using the latest update of Storyline 3.That's my guess since the caption editor was just added in the most recent update. In any case, I'm glad everything is sorted out.
Feel free to reach out again if you run into any more issues!
Thank you Alyssa, I appreciate it!

Hi all,
Great news - Update 3 of Storyline 3 is available!
We released a fix for the issue where the closed captions don't support apostrophes and other special characters.
You can view the Version history here and you'll also be able to download Update 3 here!
Thank you Ashley!
