Font changes in personalized name pages.

Apr 21, 2014

I'm making a personalized program where the learner will have their name on a number of pages.

I'm using the font Georgia. When I create the book, the pages with the learners name look different. The font is slim and jagged. All other pages are fine. Only the "name" pages are affected.

I have a dual-boot system with WinXP and Windows 7. The problem appears only in WinXP. Windows 7 is fine.

Am I in the "Twilight Zone" all by myself, or has anyone else encountered - and solved - this mystery?

Yes Phil, Georgia is installed.

Okay, so Storyline does not embed the font used in a variable. That's disappointing.

Why then does Georgia appear correctly in the personalized pages in WIndows 7 and not in WinXP? How do I fix this?

Surely you're not telling me that every time I personalize a page the font will not display correctly in WinXP - are you?

UPDATE: I just tested some other fonts. Georgia is not the issue. EVERY font is displayed poorly in the personalized pages in WinXP.

Hi Renaldo,

If the font you use for the variable reference has to be modified for the reference portion itself, it'll also modify the font for the rest of that text box so you'd need to change the set up to include the reference in it's own text box that sits over top the rest of the text.

I did a quick test on my Windows 8 PC using the Georgia font, and it displayed as expected within the published output when viewing it on my computer. Do you have a version I could test for you using this set up as well and that would help us narrow down if Windows XP is causing a particular issue for you.

Okay Ashley.

You can download an example here: http://familyfunland.com/example.story

This is a link to the same example online: http://familyfunland.com/example/story.html

This is on a site that we use for online testing. It has no content.

NOTE: I just discovered that my CLOSE BOOK button is not working. When I preview it it works fine. (EXIT PROGRAM) After I publish, it doesn't work. If you could take a look at that also and let me know what I'm doing wrong I would appreciate it.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Renaldo,

Thanks for sharing the file and a link to your published output. I tested the published output on my computer (Windows 8, Google Chrome) and the variable reference font still seemed to be Georgia font, matching the rest of the text box as set up on your slides. I did notice that where you type in the text that font is set to the Articulate font. If you'd like that font to appear when calling the variable reference you'd need to adjust it within that text box on slide 2 as it won't pick up the font based on the text entry alone.

When using your exit course button in the published version, it worked as expected for me and closed the browser window tab. There are some known reasons why the exit course button may not function as expected and those are detailed here.

Hello again Ashley.

You solved my problem with the CLOSE WINDOW button. It was the first solution on the page. When I set it to open in another tab it worked perfectly. Thanks.

Regarding the original issue: The distorted font. I know this feature works perfectly in Windows 7 and 8. That's not the problem. It does not work in WinXP. Did you check it in WinXP?

To remove any possibility of fonts "stepping on each others toes" I made everything Georgia on all pages. Still no go. When I check it in WinXP the personalized page still displays a thin and jagged font.

I uploaded a new "all Georgia" copy for you to download. Please check this in WinXP and let me know what you see.

We all know that WinXP is a dead horse as Microsoft has stopped supporting it. However (depending on what figures you accept) WinXP is still being used on 17% to 28% of computers in the USA. The percentage is said to be much higher in the business community; our market. Support or not, I suspect it will take a good while for WinXP to fade away. If there is a solution to the font display problem on personalized pages I certainly would like to have it.

Thanks for your efforts; I sincerely appreciate your help. http://familyfunland.com/example.story

Hi Renaldo,

I tested the original link this AM - and the Georgia font displayed in Windows XP using IE 6 (as that's what's installed on that Machine). I also took a look at it in Google Chrome on the XP and the Georgia font seemed to display there as well. The only difference I saw was from slide 2 to slide 3 it looked like there was some spacing differences that made the text move - but that was in the .story file itself, nothing to do with the viewing of the published output.
