Selling online courses

May 26, 2016

Hi,

We are thinking of selling our courses and ideally wanted to host them at client's LMSs to minimize our work load. I came across this article regarding selling, https://community.articulate.com/discussions/building-better-courses/selling-courses but I still have a question regarding hosting outside of our server. We really want to make sure that the courses are not customizable and what I see is that I actually can change an image or a sound in the published version if I know how Storyline works, thus there is no guarantee that the course will be as is  if clients downloads a package and upload it to the LMS. Is SCORM the only alternative then to make sure that the content is untouched? thanks for the feedback?

Hi Tamara,

I don't know that there is a way to fully prevent a client from doing as they wish with your files. If it's uploaded into their LMS, I suspect that is where your control over anything would end. I'd advise them that making changes to the published output is not something that you'd be able to offer support for, nor is it something that Articulate can support as it can have unintended consequences.

Hi, I know this post is over a year old, but I'm interested in it as I'm new to this side of elearning. In the above case, could you stipulate that as part of a client purchasing your course, they are not permitted to change or modify certain parts and remarket it as their own creation?  Or would that be a deal-breaker for the client? I understand that certain types of content must be updated and modified as the times change, but that's a different story from a client taking a course they purchased from you, modifying it, and then claiming it as their own (and possibly reselling it).

HI Rick,

It is a bit older, and just in case folks aren't subscribed here you could always use the "contact me" button on a ELH users' profile to reach out to them directly!

Best of luck with your courses and also you may want to look at reaching out in the Building Better Courses side of ELH and see if there is anyone who can help! That side tends to focus more on design and how to - but there may be folks who could help you with these Freelance questions!
