I'd agree with michael and you can review information here on how to reference variables. If you don't see any variables named as such - maybe they placed it there as a placeholder?
It could be a workaround for a text formatting issue. At our org, we've been appending a blank variable %x% to the end of text boxes. Otherwise the text comes out blurry.
can you expand on what you are doing - is this in SL1 or SL2 and is it for custom fonts or any text box with any font? What does the blank variable do?
I have seen this for the reason simon explains. In storyline 1 it was possible to get the text to look sharper by adding a blank reference at the end of the box. It needs to be a textbook as for some reason it doesn't work in shapes.
Thanks for sharing here, and yes I do remember users utilizing this as a workaround in Storyline 1 - but to answer Wendy's question, I don't believe anyone is using it in Storyline 2.

looks and sounds like a bizarre workaround...can I assume it has been fixed in later updates or are people still using this to address blurry text?
