Variable woes with a menu item

I grabbed this lovely template off of the forum here (Thanks, Jeff K!) and started to customize it...but can't get two menu items to work. It uses variable to change graphics to a visited state to show the user has been to that page.
Right now, the first 2 menu items show as being in the complete state, and thus with the check mark, even though the pages have NOT been visited and the variable should thus be still set to false, and not triggering the completed state to show up. Any ideas on what is wrong with the attached? It is making me (more) nuts.

Hello Anne,
This should be working for you now.
Thanks! I appreciate it. Can you tell me what I had done wrong?
On slide 1.1, there were two triggers than ran on timeline start that set the first two menu items to completed. I removed those two triggers. I also fixed up the hidemenu layer on the master slide so it would also show which menu items have been completed.
