Avatars can be used to break down stereotypes and support minorities. For instance, using the old, white male character above might indeed appeal to the many of participants of a law firm's leadership training participants, but what about the women or ethnic minorities who have broken through hurdles and disadvantage to reach those roles?
Using avatars that represent the majority in industries or professions that are male or female-dominated, perpetuates stereotypes and doesn't challenge these outdated norms.
Using unexpected avatars can also create novelty that aids learning, and gets people thinking.

Breaking down stereotypes is everyone's responsibility, especially those who are in the privileged groups. As a middle-aged, white male, I take challenging racial, gender-based and generational biases seriously. The fastest way to encourage diversity and break down hierarchies is when we're all on board.
