Photosynthesis-How Plants Make Food

I chose this topic because on Friday when the challenge was announced I had just taken a walk in Sunnylands Botanical Garden here in Rancho Mirage, CA. I was reading about how desert plants can thrive with almost no water, and that led me to this demo. It's a drag-drop with hint feedback. I built it as a free-from test question and found an issue--I wanted to lock in the correct drag-drop position and couldn't find a way to do it in the question options, so I had to create "veil layers" to keep people from moving a drag item after it was placed in the correct area. If there is a better way to do this please share it!
And if you have never heard of Sunnylands, here's a link: https://sunnylands.org/visit-the-gardens/ It is quite beautiful at this time of year because we have Palo Verde trees blooming. Enjoy the week!

- ThierryEMMANUEL3 years agoCommunity MemberNice layout and interesting topic, Jodi. Although I think I know a lot about plants (to avoid big mistakes when growing my bonsais), this is a good memory aid.
I tried another way to lock the elements in the correct positions during drag-drop. Each item has a normal state and a disabled state. With triggers: Change the state of the "item" to Disabled when the learner drops the object "the item" on the target "correct position for this item", the item is locked/disabled when it is in a correct position. It can no longer be moved. More simple ? I think so, but what do you think?- TracyCarroll3 years agoCommunity MemberGreat demo, Jodi! Beautiful graphics, as always.
I like Thierry's locked/disabled solution to lock correct answers during the drag-and-drop. - JodiSansone3 years agoCommunity MemberThank you....I thought I had tried that, but there were so many triggers and states that I might have just gotten tangled up in it.. You know, one thing I did was set this up as a free form quiz question with no feedback, no submit button. I wonder if that kept me from locking the position. I'll have to take another look at it. I started getting a little confused with all my triggers.
- ThierryEMMANUEL3 years agoCommunity MemberLots of triggers indeed. You may be able to avoid some of them by pasting the "correct sound" in the correct drop zone state and the "incorrect sound" in the incorrect drop zone state. My previous suggestion (disabled state when in the right position) isn't perfect. If the learner places another answer on top of the one already in a good position, the disabled answer is pushed back into the draw pile, still disabled, and it cannot be moved again. Drag and drop is blocked. Veil layers are still the right solution. Thank you for sharing your files: there is always food for thought in them.
- AliciaSloan-5d23 years agoCommunity MemberThis was fun, Jodi and I learned a lot, it's so cool that you're inspired by a recent walk. I was supposed to go to Palm Springs before Covid hit and the borders closed. Now I want to go more than ever. When I get there again, I'll think of you at Sunnylands.
- KaraMorillo-6153 years agoCommunity MemberThank you for this demo, Jodi. I wanted to build out a Rise course I made on pollinator gardens to have a more interactive feature, and your demo is exactly what I was looking for. I'll be using your example to learn and improve.
- JodiSansone3 years agoCommunity MemberOh, I just found your pollinator course in your profile! I learned so much! Just seeing you mention black-eyed susans made me miss my old Connecticut garden. I've still learning about gardening in the desert and have come to appreciate what survives here. I look forward to seeing what you do next.
- TaniaMinehan3 years agoCommunity Memberoh very good, love the interaction with the correct steps and the visual match up
- LauraGutierr0223 years agoCommunity MemberBeautiful Jodi, the ride was inspiring. What a nice combination of colors and interactions. Thanks for discovering me Sunnylands.
