Testing Carousel/Process block in Rise using NVDA

Hi everyone,

Has anyone tried testing the carousel and process blocks in Rise with the NVDA screen reader? And if yes, could you please share the key-strokes combo you used so the screen reader picks up both the Alt text for the images and the text in the steps?

I am struggling with the text element - the screen reader picks up the image Alt Text, but doesn't go to the text if using the drop arrow.

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

You are great!

Thanks.

  • Hello MadalinaMano183

Yes, we’ve tested the carousel and process blocks in Rise using NVDA.

In our testing, both the image alt text and the step text are announced when navigating in Browse Mode with the arrow keys. The Tab key typically moves between interactive controls, such as the slide buttons, while the arrow keys are used to read the content inside the block.

Because these blocks follow a carousel interaction pattern, focus lands on the navigation controls first. From there, a screen reader user can navigate the content and read it. This approach allows step-by-step navigation without requiring users to navigate through all content before reaching the controls.

To help us better understand what you’re experiencing, could you share:

    • Which browser you're using (NVDA is commonly tested with Firefox, as that combination is widely used and tends to provide consistent behavior)
    • Whether NVDA is in Browse Mode or Focus Mode
    • Whether this is in preview or published output (where is it hosted)
    • The exact key sequence you’re using when the text is not read

With that context, we can make sure we’re testing under the same conditions.

      Hello LeslieMcKerchie
Thanks for the reply. I've retested based on your steps and I think I get the confusion point for me - I usually test with the Speech Viewer window open, and in this particular case NVDA read out loud the text from both Alt text for image and the text beneath the image, but did not populate it on the Speech Viewer.
I've included below the conditions of my testing:

      • NVDA in Edge - didn't know Firefox was recommended.
      • NVDA was in Browse Mode
      • this was in published output, as Web Package
      • I used Tab to reach the actual Step button and then down arrow once - it read the Alt text of the image and the text beneath the image, but on Speech Viewer it only showed the Alt text.

I think all is well now, but because I had to pay attention to both what was shown in Speech Viewer and what is was read out-loud I surely missed something. Thanks.
